Great site you have here, I've found most of the answers to my questions just by reading some of the questions and answer posted here. I would appreciate a comment on these questions. My Rv which is a 87 E350 with a 6.9 with 77000 miles started burning oil about 1 quart every 1000 miles after reading about the CDR valve I went out today and ordered one at the local ford dealer it might fix the problem i'll find out soon, but after reading some postings it seems that burning 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles or so is acceptable for a 6.9 is that the case? also I have a small leak in my fuel pump probably from being parked for 7 months of the year an O ring or something else probaly got dry anyway would a leaking feul pump make the engine burn oil?
Try running the oil level at the lower mark with a max of 1qt above....... some engines will seek a happy medium. If your always checking/filling it up cold....... don't .....check oil hot after 10 minute drain down...... our truck expand one qt due to so much oil quantity.
If the fuel pump is leaking internally to the oil pan it could be thinning the oil, check the dipstick for a diesel smell........
Thanks for the Reply. No smell of Fuel on Dip Stick, Pump is leaking on the outside, I plan on getting it replaced next spring before the RV season starts at $1,000 to replace the pump I'm trying to wait as long as i can. I did notice that once the oil goes down to about mid point between low mark and full it pretty well stays there, I always check my oil when the engine is cold i usually let it stand over night, i never could check it once the engine had run there is oil all over the dip stick. So maybe your right the engine might reach a happy medium.
$1000?????????????? By what stretch of the imagination could it possibly be any where close to that. It probably just needs injector O-rings, not a pump, but if it does, a rebuilt injection pump should be around $400-500. I don't know how much they are charging to install it, but it can be installed in 45 mins, even on an E350.

Which pump are you talking about? If it's the lift pump, they are only around $30-35.. If it's the IP, you are still only talking around $400-500. There are many around here, who could walk you through changing out either pump.
Where exactly is the leak?
My lift pump developed a small leak, a few days ago. Went to leave this morning and it turned into a huge leak! Needless to say, I got a new lift pump today!
Well as you can Guess I'm not a mechanic but I certainly wish I was by times. The fuel is leaking from the IP I wish I could give you a technical word for were it's leaking but like I said I'm not a mechanic, I can see a built up of fuel at the base of the pump. According to the local Diesel mechanic the cause is probably a damaged O ring but he says it can't be repaired because you have to take the pump apart to get to the O ring and the problem is putting the pump back together because of the settings the pump has and I have to get it replaced and the quote of $1,000 he gave me for the job is for a rebuilt IP I gather if a rebuilt is $400 or $500 then he is charging the difference to install it, he says it would take the better part of a day to do the job (Darn if I know how long it takes to replace an IP). For now the fuel leak is very minor as far as i can see, the only reason I want to get it replaced is because if I don't start it for 2 days when I'll go to strart it up it will start on the first turn but it dies right away then I have to make it turn for a while until it starts( not very good when your in a camp ground and trying to leave at 7 am), the IP leak is probably making it lose it's pressure after a couple of days not running? if it wasn't for that I wouldn't get it replaced, sombody recomended putting an electric pump in the fuel line that I could turn on before I try to start, I don't know if that would help? I don't know what else I could do so it doesn't die on me when I start it up.
I had air intrusion, before I replaced my return lines. The electric fuel pump solved that problem. I didn't have to change the return lines, until one of the o-rings gave out and it started leaking fuel bigtime. If you did decide to go with the electric pump, you'll need to bypass the mechanical pump all together. You can use a big block chevy block-off plate, to seal the hole where the mechanical pump used to be.
Thank you all for your feed back it is very appreciated, and I think prices here are a little crazy just as an example the CDR valve alone I ordered at the ford dealer here added up to $101.70.
It's a good idea M.L.S.C., but I don't think I would venture doing the work myself it might end up costing me more with the damages I would probably end up doing, and if you bring your parts a the garage to get them installed based on past experience there not to keen on that since there loosing the mark up on the part so they will get you on the labor portion. But I'll keep the idea in mind if I can find somebody willing and knowledgeable to do the work.

M.L.S.C. I like the prices on that site ... But they only listed vaccuum pumps for the 7.3 ... Would they fit the 6.9 as well?
Yep, same pump, right now in my 7.3 truck I'm using a vacuum pump off my buddy's 6.9 - which reminds me, I need to call someone who may have a couple of those as spares, cause as you can imagine my buddy will need his power brakes soon.
