back glass options...

Well, one more question. My son, who needs his @$$ kicked from one side of the state to the other, fired one of his airsoft guns at the back glass on my F150 and he shattered it. Unfortunately, I have the four piece slider glass (two stationary pieces on the side; two slider pieces in the middle). He hit the right side stationary piece. My questions are:

1. Do they make replacements for just one of the four pieces? I called local auto glass places and they would only quote out the entire 4-piece unit for between $400 and $700!! does anyone know if you can just get the stationary section, right side??

2. I found a nice and intact single piece (non slider) glass in a salvage yard from a 75 F-100 Ranger XLT. (Interesting that that truck didn't have the slider option and my truck, which is just a Ranger did have the slider??). I can get it for $40 from the bone yard, and they someone will put it in for about $100.

Which option should I go with (assuming #1 is an option)?

thanks for any help.

I broke one of those many years ago. If I remember correctly, the aluminum channel is formed around the glass, meaning you can't replace the pieces. In those days though, you could by a new aftermarket slider for around a $100 bucks. They carried them at all the chain auto parts stores. I just found this at JC Whitney. http://www.jcwhitney.com/Truck-Windows/600000743.jcw

Back earlier in the summer, I purchased a new C.R. Lawrence 4- piece sliding rear window and gasket for my '77 (haven't had a chance to put it in) through Quality Bumper in Arizona. When I saw this post, I checked their current prices:

C.R. Lawrence Dark Gray 4-Panel Slider (CRL-DVW950BT) - $97.71 On Sale

C. R. Lawrence Window Gasket (CRL-WBL1158) - $46.71 On Sale

I checked the site sponsors first prior to finding this deal. I always try to go through the sponsors first.

This is just an option in case you want to replace with an entire new window/gasket.

If it's the factory Sliding window, then yes you can replace the individual glass sections.

You have to remove the entire window from the truck, then there are phillips head screws holding the frame together on the bottom, and the side supports around the middle of the outer glass. Might be hard to get apart after 30 years, though. the glass is surrounded with a rubber seal, that fits inside the frame.

The Replacement Glass is obsolete however, so you will have to get the section from the local wrecker, or have one made. Good news is, the right side glass, is swappable with the left, and visa versa, so if you find one broke in the wrecker, on just the one side, the other side will work for you.

The sliding rear window for 1973-1981 pickups with brushed aluminum, (Now Obsolete) was updated in 1982-1996 with the black narrow "painted" aluminum frame that's almost invisible one. (Still avaliable from Ford.)

So if you want the year correct Frame, stick with the 1973-1981 window. If you don't care, get a new one from Ford, or aftermarket.

The Factory Slider was optional on all Models, None came with it standard.

Hope this helps.

I had one busted out and I made one from plexiglass. Cost me nothing to do. You can buy the plexiglass at Home Depot and cut it yourself. It bends just enough to go into the frame if you don't want to take the entire window out and it looks perfect.

When you say 'have one made', I didn't think most glass places could cut safety/tempered auto glass to size. Would you know who could make me a piece?

thanks-

ANY autoglass shop can cut you a new pane of glass from glass stock.

No longer viable. Ford has replaced one sliding rear window kit with another, see the following....

> > At some time after 7/10/2008, when I posted the price of the sliding back window kit noted above, Ford has replaced it (E2TZ10422B30A) with another, the price has nearly tripled! < <

The E2TZ part number still shows "good" on FTEpartsguys website, but when I typed the number just now into Ford's in-house parts locator system, it shows it's been replaced.

F4TZ15422B30B .. Sliding Rear Window Kit / Replaced E2TZ10422B30A **

MSRP: $307.72 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $221.56

** One Ford dealer still shows one of these kits. The dealer may sell it cheap, since he cannot return it to Ford (accessories are not returnable).

Alan Vester Ford-L/M in Roanoke Rapids NC has it.

Wow. Thanks a bunch for the info NumberDummy. I'll get out to a couple of Autoglass places and see if that option would work. But bottom line, it DOES sound like you have to remove the frame to be able to get the piece in.

On the other option (new kit), that option might be GREAT. I live only 45 minutes from Roanoke Rapids! In fact, I was just there in a soccer tournament two weeks ago. Thank you VERY much for getting onto the Ford parts website to check dealer inventory. I'll call them Monday to verify stock.

Dunno about removing the frame, never took one of these sliders apart.

That's the only dealer that shows the kit (shows good on the locator as of 10/02/08), no obsolete parts vendor has one.

btw: The Blue Ridge Parkway is my favorite drive in the USA.

Now if the Feds would just fix the dang thing so one can drive straight thru without those detours near Boone.

Yep, you have to remove the window from the truck.

At the bottom of the factory window you will notice a split in the frame. It's held together with a small bracket and two phillips head screws, you remove them, the tiny bracket, and the seal at the bottom, and then you can distort the frame so the center sections will slide out from the center.

Then you remove the two solid center pieces holding the side glass on. There is a philips screw on top and bottom holding this section in. After this is removed, the side glass can slide right out as well.

Repair may not be viable, depending on the quality of the original seals. They are obsolete as well.

Hope this helps.

1973/79 Sliding Rear Window Seals

The seals may be obsolete, but...

I found the following, all are new originals (NOS).

These two seals are unique to 1973/79's. See note below for the others.

D3TZ10420A28A .. Back Window Seal-Grey Vinyl

Green Sales has 9 = 800-543-4959 / Parts International has 3 = 888-727-0418 / JST Automotive has 2 = 615-443-3086 / McDonald's Obsolete Parts has 2 = 812-359-4965
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D3TZ10422A68A .. Back Window Glass Side Seal

Green Sales has 13. / Parts International has 2. / McDonalds Obsolete Parts has 1.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: The back glass upper & lower horizontal runs (seals) are still available from Ford as they fit from 1973 thru 1998.

I'll post the info later tonight, as I have errands to run.

That is great news, Bill.

Definately got some options to work with on repairing these old windows!

When you all talk about seals and such, does the window "kit" that Ford sells not include the seals. One would assume (bad word, I know) that seals are included, otherwise, why call it a "kit". How many seals are needed for these slider windows and which ones are you all talking about that are still available and which ones are obsolete and available from the places NumberDummy quotes?

Thanks-

ps -

Yes, the Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most beautiful drives in the USA. Figures that stretch near Boone is Fubard. Boone IMO is a lot like Asheville, NC. Beautiful Appalachian city that a few years ago was suffering in the tourism business and decided to opt in to the All-Inclusive City motif. You wouldn't believe what this entails, but let us just say they went and still go to great pains to get the weird and losers of the world to come stay there. Unbelievable. With the risk that I now say something politically incorrect, I have to stop now....but I wish I didn't.
