New Tranny!

Hey all,
I picked up an AOD from the junk yard yesterday and i'm planning on sliding it in tonight.

Any advice or things to look out for?

Is it out of a truck or a van?
A van has a different arm on the side then a truck and if you try to change it the shaft will brake most of the time when you go to back off the nut.

What year is it out of, older years had a TV rod and you have a TV cable.

You will have to adjust the TV setting when you are done or you may destroy the transmission.

Also change the oil in it and the filter if it has one.

I swaped the tranny before i could get a chance to read this but any way the tranny seems like it was rebiult not very long ago, but it sat for a while. I'm thinking it has a sticky valve becuse it has a strong reverse and first but it won't shift. Also when you get moving and let off, the RPM's just drop off, they don't slow down according to speed. One more thing I called a local retired tranny guy and he said something about a govener in the back of the tranny. He then told me he was busy and was gonna call back when he had time to explain it, but he never did. Anyone out there know what he was talking about?

If I didn't explian something well enough please tell me and I will try help you.
Thanks! R.A.

The tranny came from an 86' F-150 4X4

Did you install and adjust a TV cable or link?

The Throttle Valve cable/link is essential. Transmission failure is guaranteed without it, and in very short order.

AOD's are troublesome boxes, with later models better than others.

This link has TV cable adjustment as well as parts, information, ways to spend money, etc.

TCI AOD Throttle Valve Adjustment Instructions

If you have not done this, don't drive it.

No. Not sure if the AOD uses one of those too, but the TV cable has to do with pressure inside the trans which affects up and down shifting. That link show anything familiar?
