First post to this fine site. Appreciate any help offered.
Notice a roar at 50 mph. Really sounds like tires. Rotated tires and no change. Notice a leak in the right front axle seal. Afraid that means the axle bearing is bad too.
I've also read where the front hub / wheel bearing may also be the culprit. Any help would be appreciated. Any way to isolate the wheel bearing from the axle bearing?
How tough is it replace the axle bearing (just inside the CV joint)? Is it pressed in like the back wheel bearings?
most bearing noises in the front end are the wheel bearings. you can take the wheel and brake caliper off and rotate slowly and try to "feel" for rough spots or nosie. kind of hard at several RPM comapred to 50 MPH. below is for a F150, but you get the idea.
It was the left front bearing. Got someone else to drive and it was clear the noise was not coming from the right front. It was worse when you drove 50 mph and turned left (put more outward pressure on the bottom of the wheel). When I heard this, I knew it was the bearing.
