Our chocolate lab puppy got attacked at the dog park today. The attacker was one of these pit bull things. He latched onto our dogs neck and wouldn't let go. I wanted to kick him off my dog, but there was a whole bunch of shrieking women around I couldn't get a good shot at the dog without kicking a woman. So I grabbed the dog's head and tried prying his jaws open but that was hopeless. Finally I jammed my finger into his eyeball and he let go.
Fortunately our puppy was ok. He has a couple of cuts but he's his old self again.
I'm not going to stop taking him to the park. But I wasn't ready for something like that to happen and didn't know how to deal with it.
Sorry you and your puppy had to deal with this. The next time you go bring a cheap squirt gun filled with ammonia. One squirt in the face will change any dogs mind
Go immediately to the police and file a complaint. The attacker will kill. Be extremely careful of trying to intervene in a dog fight as you can be severely injured. What if there had been a child at risk? I 2nd the ammonia suggestion.
As much as I love animals and I really do, the only good pit bull is a dead pit bull goes for other dogs that are designed for killing only. I know pit bulls and you are lucky that you got that thing off of your pup, they will usualy lock their jaws from there you can just about out right kill the dog and it will not turn loose.
Had a dog like that years back attack my dog, the dog simply came out of nowhere and nailed my dog in the throat, I tried to break him loose but would not let go and by then it was starting to realy clamp down with nothing but a 2X4 that I was lucky enough to get ahold of I went to work. My dog survived the encounter wont tell of the other.
I got pissed just reading your story web, Im glad it turned out ok for you.
What i woulda did is pretty much the same thing you did. I probably woulda tried to gently push a woman out of the way and boot the attacker real good and hard in the ribs. The eyes, and the nose works pretty well too.
After all said and done, I woulda called either the cops or animal control and got the other dog looked at. Did you say anything to the owner?
What I would do is get a small strait tree about 1-1 1/2 inches thick and 6ft long and make a walking stick out of it.
Everytime you take the dog for a walk bring it along.. You can use it to beat of other dogs or any other low lifes that may invade your space.. It also has the added benefit of assisting you if you fall or need to keep the women away..
carry a gun and next time that happens shoot to kill those dog are known for there aggression and where was that pit bulls owner he at fault for not being able to control his/her there dog
im sorry to say shoot to kill but i lost a pet to those dogs they just grabbed my cat by the neck and shook it to death while the owner of the dog watched and laughed. he wasn't laughing when the county put his dog down.
Up in canada you cant carry a gun around like ya must be able to do down there!
If I seen an animal getting killed by a dog, and the owner laughing, after i killed his dog, I would whoop the owners ***. Thats ridiculous, and I dunno how you didnt flip out on him man.
a pit grabs my 11lb chit-zu and bites down once, all in less than 2 seconds my dog could be killed......i would have no choice, and not even have a second to contemplate my choices, my reaction would be to take hold of the dog
ill take 157 stitches if i have to, as im looking back at my dog right now, i feel for webseths
That's a shame you think that way. My pit bull is the most lovable animal I've ever owned. In fact, all the pit bulls I've owned have been similar in their disposition. Blame the owners; not the breed.
I've broken up dog fights (I used to foster for my local Humane Society with an average pack size of about 8-10 dogs at a time) and agree with some of the suggestions (ammonia, sticks).
I've had good success by grabbing right below their ears on each side and pulling them back and off the attacked. Something about it makes them let go. Plus, if it is a pit bull terrier that is the attacker, it prevents them from shaking their head back and forth...which is how they inflict injuries on the attacked.
Sorry about your puppy. What was he doing when the dog attacked him? Didn't you see him in the area? You can always see the tell-tale signs of an unstable dog or one that is wanting to attack...if you know what you're looking for.
were not really talking about pits in general attacking people out of the blue. were talking about the fact that a pit bull almost in general cant control its urges around other dogs.
yes, you and your pits might be in control, but your not in the majority. and your pit,is one of a handfull of breeds that are capable of inflicting death on people and dogs on a moments notice, and in very little time. not bashing the breed what so ever, but its a unique breed, that scares the chit out of most people and im sure most breeds
