Blackstone said my oil analysis looked better than most for my mileage. Indeed, all my numbers were at or below universal averages except for one: molybdenum. It was five times higher. Blackstone didn't comment on it so I'm not really concerned but does anybody have an idea where molybdenum comes from?
I didn't use any oil additives and tho oil was Motorcraft 15W-40.
The Molybdenum for virgin Motorcraft 15W40 should be 6 ppm according to my analysis.
What is your value?
Sorry, I confused molybdenum with magnesium. My moly is 31, which is below the universal avg of 33.
My MAGNESIUM is 591, well above the universal avg of 91. This is also way above my previous magnesium readings. Any ideas?
I called Blackstone. Those guys ROCK, by the way. I was on and off the phone with an answer in less than 90 seconds.
Magnesium is used in detergent additive packages, which differ depending on manufacturer. In that respect, the "universal average" of magnesium doesn't mean much. No worries.
sounds like you are using good oil and have great a engine! i like blackstone aswell and they have always been super quick and helpful online and on the phone.
has anyone had there tranny fluid analyzed by them. i bought my truck used and am not sure when the last time it was changes. assuming that it was maintained on fords plan i should be fine but have been thinking maybe i should flush it just incase. then i had the idea that if i got it tested by blackstone they could tell me if its good and that would save me money on getting it flushed and all the filters changed?
what would be the best way to get a sample?
sorry for the hijack JIM reading your thread made me think about this and i don't think it's worth me starting a whole new thread.

No problem Adam - just call them up and ask for a sample kit. They do trans oil analysis; even had it in their newsletter a few months back.
You could do the half flush and get a sample that way - drain and fill just the pan and change the external filter. You have to watch how much drains; could be between 7 and 9 quarts.
thanks! i was think more on the lines of trying to syphon some tranny fluid out of the dip stick tube so i won't loss any fluid. i'm not apposed to the half flush like you stated but i think my fluid is still good but i just want to be sure and have blackstone check it for me. i have seen 1/8" syphon tubes that are connected to something like turkey baster for sale at auto zone. maybe i will just try it out and see if it works...
If the fluid is pink and doesn't smell burnt it's probably good. Do you know if the truck towed a lot before you bought it?
Since yours is souped up you might check for metal fines in the external filter, just in case.
yeah the truck has a gooseneck hideaway hitch and the dealer i bought it from said the previous owner was into horse shows and towed a horse trailer all over the country and it was "well maintained" and "all highway miles"
the fluid looks perfect and doesn't smell burnt at all but i have read post on here from Mark K (tranny guru) that even if the fluid looks good it can be degenerated and the additives are low.
BTW i am not having any tranny probs what so ever. shifts perfect even wide open up hill with my hybrid tune and it doesn't slip or anything and the temps are always low usually 165 on the highway.
also i don't abuse or race my truck so it's not like i am alway beating on it and now worried. i am just not sure when the fluid was changed and don't want first off cause damage to the tranny from not servicing it or second pay the dealer like $300 to fully flush and change all filters because that what i would have them do if it needs to be changed.
