ECM Question

I have just removed the two biggest intake air restrictions on my 2002 5.4 F150. One was the tiny pipe that seals to the fender and is responsible for pulling in cooler air, and the other one is the restrictor tube housed within the large plastic elbow just before the throttle body. This modification appears to have made a seat of the pants difference in the low end acceleration from a dead stop.

My questions are: 1) In order to maximise any gains from this do I need to disconnect the negative battery cable to force the ECM to re-calculate the incoming air charge, or will it take care of this all by itself over time?

2) Aside from clearing codes, what reason(s) are there for ever forcing a reset of the ECM and what is the correct method for reseting the ECM?

Thanks

The ecm is constantly taking readings from sensors and recalibrating. If you let more air in, it measures how much and adjusts accordingly automaticaly. You dont need to reset your ecm. the only reason would be to get rid of a code that you fiked, and you dont have a scanner.

by doing that you are reseting your eeprom (electronicaly erased programable read only memory) your eeprom hold all the settings like that

You're confusing EEPROM with NVRAM. EEPROM does nopt erase with the removal of power.

NVRAM is what is used to store variable information. Typically, NVRAM is static RAM with an on-board power storage source, whether a battery or a simple capacitor (as is used on Ford's designs). Ford refers to the as Keep-Alive Memory (KAM).

It is far easier to remove the single fuse that supplies the PAM pin of the PCM than to disconnect the battery. Just pull the fuse and 10-15 minutes later, all KAM has reset to defaults. Doing this makes is easier on the owner, also, eliminating the need to reset the clock and all the other presets.

See your owner's manual to determine which fuse is used for KAM.

KAM and PCM are acronyms used by Ford.

The rest have used by the electronics industry for a decade or two (at least).

Kam

So in response to my original questions about the on board computer and my air intake mods, are we all still in agreement that it is unnecessary to reset the computer in order to maximise the benefits from the modification?

Thanks

It probably doesn't matter. You can either do nothing or do a reset and you'll eventually end up in the same place.
