ok heres the deal i got a 1990 7.3 idi 5spd my buddy has a 1996 dodge cummins turbo diesel is there any way to get my 7.3 to keep up with the dodge without costing a arm and leg. also i plan on getting the banks sidewinder.
The '96 is a Bosch P7100 IP equipped truck, what that means is every time you upgrade something on your truck he can upgrade his truch 10 times easier to match or out-do you. You'll be playing catch-up all of the time.
Put a turbo on yours with the associated boost gauge and pyrometer, a good exhaust and you'll be able to do anything a reasonable person should be doing with a pick up.
You probably also won't be too far off of him for seat-of-the-pants power, empty anyway.
well he has a chip and they took something off the turbo but it leaves my old truck in the dust. i thought about a cummins conversion but the price is prob high and my 7.3l runs like a dream maybe when she gets worn out ill swap her out
About the only thing you can take off a turbo is the linkage for the waste gate which means he can build up stupid amounts of boost. So he gots the air coming in, then he turns up his pump, and if his coolant system is up to the task you're SOL, at least till his drivetrain says enough is enough.

Your dead on about that!
Plugging a waste gate is STOOPIDO!
There's nothing to "chip" in a '96 so he's pulling your leg about that. He probably has a new "plate" in the IP.
Your flat out NOT going to catch a '94-up Cummins in an IDI. Any drastic measures you take would have yeilded MUCH higher improvements in the Cummins. What I'm saying is power comes EASY in the P7100 Cummins and actually pretty easy in the '89-'93s also if you know what your doing.
My "94 IDI turbo has enough power to keep me happy STOCK with 371K on it so put a turbo on yours and be happy.
That's my advice anyway.
I drove a 97 Dodge Cummins for a few months, untill the tranny started acting up and I couldn't get it right. There was no way in the world any truck I had would catch it, loaded or not. I pulled an 80 horse John Deere Tractor in front of my dad with a forklift, about the same weight but the tractor had a LOT of wind resistance while the forklift had almost none. He was in his 01 F350 Powerstroke, I left him like it was nothing. There was not one area where any Ford I had ever seen could catch it, loaded or not.
No disrespect to the Fords (well, maybe Powerstrokes LOL) but there's a reason the Cummins is the king of "hot rodding", personally I'm into diesels for actual real-world use so the IDIs suit me just fine but when pushed to the limit the Powerstoke and Duramax don't hold up as well and cost a lot more to build.
When you start running 4-digit horsepower and torque numbers the Cummins comes out on top.
For all of us in the REAL WORLD any of them will get the job done. I like my Cummins because it never breaks and I like my IDIs because they are affordable and easy to work on and Ford put it in a CrewCab that I can actually afford to own and not have to make payments on.
^^ 100% correct i love the cummins motor. nothing matches it lb for lb. as for the d-maxx's theres just somthing about aluminum heads on a cast block that i dont like. alot of people have them and like them but i dont think i will ever own one. even if the 6.9L ultimax comes into existance.

VW had problems with aluminum heads on their first (U.S. anyway) diesels too.
I feel the same way about the Duramax and it's aluminium heads, it would be my LAST choice in a diesel truck. It's way to "gas like" for me.
They can get lots'a power out of them but they have to replace almost everything (EXPENSIVE!!!!) and they still break.
If you pull one apart the components look a lot like 426 Hemi parts, great for a gasser, not so great for a diesel.
I've seen three broken cranks and heard a lot with piston skirt knock. GM calls it "normal"!
