Although my Dad got the big engine for the 4 door sedan at the time, the optional 312 V8, 4bbl , dual exhaust rated at 225 hp. I recall it had as they used to say, lots of 'pick-up'. I was pretty young, but I did realize that the '56 Ford were great cars. Always liked the body style.
Geez, Sheldon, you make me feel old. I bought my first colour TV a 19 inch Sony Trinitron in 1980 with my back pay.

In fact I've got a motorcycle that I bought new in '78 (Yamaha SR500) and another bike...a '67 Matchless 750 Scrambler, that are older than you.But as they say the new 60 is the old 30.....

I chose it, because there used to be a road racing series for showroom stock cars. A magazine (C&D) back then did a comparo of the available vehicles in the economy car class in the race series.
The cars in the series were Pintos, Vegas, VW Beetles, Datsun (Nissan) 510's , Corollas...etc.
The fastest car in the crowd that C+D found in testing, was believe it or not, the Toyota Corolla, but only in a rare model.
The criteria they used was acceleration, handling, braking...how fast it would get around a road racing track.
The model being the stripper Corolla base Coupe with the optional 1600cc OHV HEMI , 4 speed std., HD suspension with 13 inch tires and front disc brakes. It was pretty light, no radio, no carpeting, just rubber on the floor.
I think I had to check at the 3 Toyota dealerships before I could find a stripper, so equipped in the dealer inventory.
The 'normal' Corolla had 12 inch tires, drum brakes , 1200cc OHC.
As far as performance, handling and braking it was pretty good. I recall running a 'rich' buddy who had a '73 Toyota Celica (2200cc) 5 speed std.
I don't think I ever lost a race to him.
It was the light weight, relatively big engine (1600cc vs 1200 cc) and my fabulous
shifting.
