Any idea's

Alright guys, im doing a big ole write up for a newb thread. Trying to pool together as much stuff as i can, just basic stuff, lifts, tires, maintenance, recovery, things to take along, types of wheeling, and tips for each kind of terrain.....

So guys throw some idea's out there. Lets keep this one on track as best as we can, if we want to discuss something, please take it to the general purpose thread. I want to collect a variety of info from different people, so its not all what i think or what i do.

So any suggestions and idea's to add to it?

If you have a good section to add, i will probably copy and paste it.

I will and try and keep track of who's idea's and thoughts i use and give credit where credit is due. But this is going to be probably a week out, before i post up the whole thing....

PLEASE KEEP THIS THREAD ON TRACK, if you want to discuss something or talk about something, make a note of it in a post, and take it to the general thread PLEASE!

Thanks guys!

How about a basic write up explaining TTB, D44, D60, gearing, and types of locking diffs. A general, basic newbie writeup on the drivetrain basically. I love STGs write up on the 44, but maybe something thats actually tech about the axle for people who don't need to replace it/ don't know anything about what they have under their truck.

I have. For the newb tech: Lockers (non-selectable) aren't necessarily all they are cracked up to be. Here's why: they are designed to be fully locked, with the ability to unlock. Some are better than others at this. For example, my buddy had a detroit soft locker in the back of his bronco. It was quiet and smooth, but you knew it was back there. I have a lockrite. It works equally well, but it isn't quiet and smooth. It clunks a lot when unlocking.

Regardless of which one you choose, here's why they might not be that good for a street vehicle. If you have an automatic transmission, there is power always being supplied to the axle. It never has a true break, like pushing in the clutch on a manual would. In good driving conditions, this isn't really a problem, but in slippery ones, it could send you spinning.

That being said, I have a lockrite with a manual trans. Fellow user scottfreeman has a lockrite and an auto. He seems to have no problems in the ice and snow, but his tires are siped and mine aren't. Take that for what it is worth.

There are disadvantages with lockers aswell.
Harder to make a turn, your tires can't turn at different speeds. That also contributes to more tire wear....I think thats it? Lol.

I'm seriously considering calling you Baconator instead of Truckin4Life. Much easier for me to type out. :P

Is there anything that you need information ON? Other than people spraying out random things that you might already have?

That statement is simply "not true".

A locker is designed to "Ratchet" and allow the tires to rotate at different speeds during a turn. My Detroits can stay dis-engaged on the street. No tire wear, and I tow pretty heavy trailers with a Detroit equiped truck.
This is simply for a non-selectable locker.
For selactable lockers, they will stay dis-engaged until they are called.

No tire wear for either one, and no difficulties while turning.

I do not see any disadvantages at all.

As for the locker... your thinking about a linoln locker... aka welding.

I think mini spools are the same they fully lock... I could be wrong though...

He used to be on here too. Not sure if he got kicked off or just quit coming by.

That was his lincoln locker for some weird front loader rockwells he used for a buggy. I agree, his fabrication is out of this world.

I suppose I was referring to the Lincoln locker. Thanks for the correction.
I suppose that is the poor-man's locker.
I suppose I should think of another way to start a sentence..

And I still have a disadvantage for lockers.

Cost.

Yeah its obvious that having one is better than not having one... if you have the money to pour into a rig.

I mean yeah they're good but they cost hundreds of dollars..

If your going for a cheap wheeler just weld the spider gears... or steal one. :P
