Heater core questions

Once the heater core is out is it possible to attach new hoses (very long)with the worm gear clamps on the new core then install the core? This way I will not have to fight the narrow space when I have to put the clamps on the hose. I just don't know if the clamps will fit through the holes for the heater core pipes if I put them on first.

The last time I replaced the core I damged the gasket pretty bad. Is there any type of replacement gasket anyone could reccommend? Maybe just a hardening silicone?

Thanks
Doug

No-unless you widen out/oval out the openings. I have had other cars in the past that not because of the un-attainability to installing the clamps caused me the cut/alter the holes but simply the core had more of a bend and I didn't want the metal firewall rubbing/slicing into the weak tubing.

Since this is only a pain in the @$$ once in a blue moon I recommend NOT going against the grain and going back in the hard way. I personally went back in on the worm gear clamps with a very small quarter drive ratchet and attached the 5/16" SAE socket.

NOW--I really wouldn't be myself unless I included some shade tree technical advice to you. Ready? Here is is:

My trick is that I slide the hose on after soaking them in very hot water. Very moldable and soft at this point. After the installation of hose it is time for the clamps--VERY IMPORTANT!--install the top hose 1st. Now install the clamp on the hose loosely BUT DON'T slide it reward yet. Have the worm gear screw hanging down on the right side of the hose (3 O'clock position). REASON. Easier access for your hand.

NOW HERE IS THE TRICK. Take a light bead of super glue and place it around the head of the screw WHAT DID YOU SAY BOZ???? Listen. The reason that this is sooooo freakin' hard is that the ratchet normally "POPS" off right! Especially once you get a couple of turns/clicks in. By lightly placing a couple of drops of super glue on the screw and then holding until your ratchet adheres to it/sets up you will have a ONE PIECE process. Ratchet like normal. When you are sure that your are completely done you will be able to reach your hand into the tight space a pop the ratchet back off.

Worst case scenerio. You put too much glue on (a couple drops goes along way). Your ratchet handle will be facing you. Simply take an extension with a deep well socket just big enough to slip over the handle. Wiggle up and down then ---WALLAAAAAAAA-installed. No mus no fuss. Repeat for the next lower hose the same way. I did the last time and my I.Q. went up. I was strutting around the drive way like a peacock.--G. Luck Boz
