first off , the tach sensor is bad form the description of the tach dropping out at idle
the vss could be bad also , what year model is the truck
and the vacuum pump shouldnt have to come off to replace the tach sensor
also you shouldnt even consider the torque converter code because of the tach and vss codes
the processor needs these two sensor to determine converter slippage
remember always repair the first codes first as they can generate secondary codes

This is on my 93 7.3. Where the vacuum pump sits, the tach sensor is only about 1/4" below it. I will take a picture and post it later. It's moving day! I am planning on replacing the VSS and tach sensor first. Got a quote of $63 for the tach sensor..
i,d start with the vss , but your truck is equipped with a programable speedometer odometer module in the instrument cluster and it can cause the vss code but the vss sensor is cheap and the most likely problem they fail regularly
Went to AZ today and bought a VSS. I looked the part up on their website and checked availability at my local store (Martinsburg, WV) They had it listed for $29.99. I was down in Winchester, VA getting a hair cut and stopped at the AZ beside the place. The same part was only $14.99 there! Anyway, I'll get it put in asap and see what happens.
