So... I got my truck and its great, I mean really great! Except for the oil leak,
I was told today that the injector gasket is leaking, is this normal/common?
Is it a big deal? Does it point to other potential issues?
Who told you the injector gasket was leaking? Can you tell us more about the oil leak? Is the oil dripping on the ground or covering the engine, or are you burning oil? How does the truck run aside from the leak?
The injectors have o-rings on them which could fail, but if there is any visible evidence of oil on the ground or motor, then it doesn't sound like an injector issue.
Its an 03 F350 and i took it to the mechanic today and they said it originally looked like the rear main seal was leaking but when they looked closer they found it coming from the top of the motor and it was dripping down into a valley and then going through a moisture drip hole and on to the ground.
Ford has a technical bulletin out about this issue indicating that it may look like the rear main seal but could actually be the injector gasket.
The truck runs great otherwise but it does leak oil more when I drive it harder.
Ford does have a TSB stating to look for other leaks than the rear main seal, but it's not an injector gasket you're looking for. The best thing to do is clean the oil up (some simple green and low pressure water) and watch to see where the leak is coming from.
How much oil is leaking? I've had a small leak (2 qts in 5000 miles) from a loose boot on the intake plenum. Other common issues are 0-rings on the high pressure oil lines, either at the HPOP (high pressure oil pump) or the heads, the plug on the back of the HPOP, turbo pedestal o-rings, or EBPV (exhaust back pressure valve) located in the turbo pedestal.
After you clean things up, determine if the oil is leaking from the front, middle, or back of the valley to help narrow things down. Also keep some spare oil with you if you continue to drive the truck while looking for the leak. Your fuel injectors run off of engine oil, so if the oil gets too low, it's time to walk.
Ok its leaking at the front, not too much but every time I park it there are a few drops down there, unless I drive it hard then theres more of a puddle.
I'll clean it and track it down, thanks.
If it's in the front of the motor, I'd check the HPOP lines and plug. Those are the common leaks up front. You can wrap a rag around the lines to help isolate where the oil is coming from.
Chris, maybe we should investigate the drain plug o-rings on the fuel bowl as well?? It would come out that exact spot and look like oil after running through all that grime.

Are you losing oil on the dipstick?
Good point. A sniff test is definitely a good idea to make sure we're chasing the right fluid.
Alright, I reached in and felt a puddle and its definently oil. The valley's had about as much as they could hold too. And when I said front of the motor I meant right under the intake (although I'm sure you knew). And I'm loosing oil on the dipstick too.
