Guys,
Have a 05 Nissan Sentra and the CEL light keeps coming on and going off randomly.
I had it checked and it's the gas cap causing it. Replaced the gas cap with one from the parts store and it is still randomly turning on and off.
The light will come on and I will remove and reseat the gas cap. A couple miles later it will go out. Than without removing the gas cap again the light will come back on. If I remove and reseat the cap the light will than go out again. The light dosen't seem to come on right after a fill up. It's more random than anything.
It is possible for a cap to be bad out of the box. Aftermarket or OEM?
Check the fill pipe fittings, make sure there aren't any holes or damage.
After that, you need to look at the tank and the other evap equipment. The evap equipment should give it's own codes, but a leak is a leak methinks and a leak anywhere might show up the same.
I work at a dealership. If you get the codes I can look them up for you. Also the vent control valves on the charcoal canister go bad a lot, kinda weird the cel going on and off though.
Hasn't come back on yet. Have driven about 25 miles on it today and no CEL light.
Are the control valves seperate or part of the charcole canister?
A little off topic but what is a recomendation for a decent code reader that would work on any car. It would need the CAN5 or whatever for the newer Fords. Is there a reader for ODBII and ODB1 (before 95)? FYI I have a 93 - 01 ford - 03 Audi - 05 Sentra - 07 Ranger and would like one device if possible.
Looked up the code in the service manual. Most common is the gas cap, if you got an aftermarket one. My techs and Nissan state to use OEM, because those aftermarket ones do not seal properly sometimes. If not then you need to pressurize the system with air, and find out where the leak is. Vent lines to the gas tank, the charcoal canister and control valve lines and the air intake and throttle body lines... Hope this helps.
I have an '02 sentra and experienced a similar situation. However, I was getting both a P0455 and a P1448 code. I removed the canister vent control valve (held on with two screws--mounted on the EVAP canister) sprayed it liberally with a spray lubricant, and re-installed the part.
That was about 4 months ago and there has been no sign of the CEL since.
In short, make sure that a P1448 code is not present with the P0455. If both are present, I would suspect the vent control valve.
This problem is I would think in the purge canister control valve or pressure sensor THAT CONTROLS the purge valve. Two separate parts but first check the vac lines and wires for a loose conection. When you remove the cap it relieves pressure for a few minutes which can fool the pressure sensor for a few minutes until the main computer detects a problem and turns on the CEL. hope this helps.
Ok.
This is what I found out. There are 2 vaccume lines under the hood that have to do with EVAP. One line goes under the car and to a box at the rear under the trunk on the drivers side. The box has a bunch of hoses goign into it. I didn't remove it as I will have to drill out the screw that will snap when taken off. I was that modivated when I checked it. I am thinking this box or part of it (if available) might need replacing. The check valve under the hood has a valve similar to a tire valve in it and states 1psi max.
RL_F150 this 05 dosen't have a charcol canister under the hood.
I did put the gas cap from my 07 ranger on the car and drove it for about an hour (differant trips) and the CEL did not go off. I have not driven the ranger with the Sentra's cap on it yet (driving the 36mpg beater).
I might just take the car to a shop and have them fog the system to find the leak.
The valve you mentioned looking like a tire valve is used to hook up the smoke machine. This is definitly the best way to find the leak, guy I work with bought his own and although pricey, is worth it if you do alot of this type of work. My bet is on the the vent
Actually that box behind left rear tire is the EVAP cansister on the B15 chassis (2000-2006) Sentras. The EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve that I was talking about is located on that canister, held on by two screws.
As you observed, if you decide to tackle this, be ready for at least one of the screws holding on the vent control valve to snap off...I just used liquid gasket to make sure everything was sealed. You shouldn't have to remove the canister itself though.
