My 97 F350 4x4 shifts hard after warming up, 1-2 the worst and also if in third and punch it will kick down and right back up, you can feel the TC do its double shift feel in third and OD. tranny stays cool even pulling my 32 ft gooseneck at about 160 , put a 6.0L cooler on it. I bought this truck used so don't know whats been done to it. I have a 5pos chip TS reprogramed by TW. Also can a AT rob power and make bad MPG ,only getting around 10MPG, just rying to figure things out, also have stage 1's.
All has been changed and no differance, fluid was burnt smelling but don't know when it was changed before, I changed it when in I added cooler. and drained TC.

Have you Checked the fluid level, color and odors lately. Hot of course.
Remove the chip and see if it's the same.
Scan the truck for stored codes...even if the CEL is off.
Check all the electrical connectors on the trans for corrosion,, bent pins, ect.
Trans shop will scan it for free in most cases. It must be driven to get the proper info from the trans. If you can, jump in the truck and go with them....look over their shoulder at the scanner. It may also need to have the pressures tested...that may cost you a little.
Checked fluid level and still looks and smells like new oil, I have a OBDII and no codes, this has done this since I bought it ,the owner before me described it as bucking going into OD. chip doesn't really make that much differance except in a medium tow mode where it doesn't go into OD till about 50MPH. Some one said today to replace throttle sensor? I have already changed the VSS. and checked all wiring at soleniods. and any connections.
I have heard, but have been unable to verify, that sometimes the connections to the instrument cluster can give false readings to the PCM and cause this issue.
I have been having this type of situation also. I have replaced the flexplate, TC, tranny and VSS and I still get a P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction error (verified by my friend's Edge).
I haven't removed the instrument cluster or checked the wiring from the VSS forward. I'm disabled and have had two surgeries over the past few years and am needing another surgery. I just don't have enough time-off saved up yet.
I've replaced everything I could think of replacing, but I still get the code every once in awhile. It doesn't matter what I'm doing or how fast I'm driving. Nothing specific seems to set the code; it just happens.
The Edge shows the line pressure going from single-digit readings to double-digit readings. When the code sets, the line pressure reading is 70 and the shifts are extremely harsh.
I clear the code. Shutoff the truck. Start up after two to three minutes and everything is fine.
I don't know if these symptoms are what you're experiencing, but they're something to keep in mind.
I don't mean to but wanted to get some of my symptoms online to see if you're having anything similar.
I'm thinking I need crawl under the truck to check wires from back to front and probably pull the instrument cluster. If I do these things, I need to make sure my "back pills" are refilled first.
Good luck with your situation. Let us know what you find out. Maybe it will help me track down my continuing problem.
mine doesn't set a code, and OD light works, never has flashed, how do you check pressures or can a OBDII read it in tranny. My chip doesn't matter did since I got the truck with out chip. I am still waiting to hear if a tranny can rob power,my truck pulling sucks. mainly at 30mph and up only can pull about 60 to 65 even pulling a regular car hualer trailer, puls great from start, just no speed and EGTs can go up if I really get on it.
sounds like my 97 4+4 i can't run 75 empty after spending $2400. last fall to have it run no better i would never buy a nother diesel. I allways say i cant get 10 miles to a gallon down hill with the key off
I wish I had the money to get another tranny and TC, really would like to figure this out. had a 99 dually that I bought new and that truck would get 17mpg and pull a 35ft gooseneck like it wasn't there, and never dropped below 10mpg.
the 4.30 gears arnt helping your economy, but it shouldnt be that bad, i would still estimate 14-15 mpg empty and 10 towing out of your truck. the fact that its an auto vs a stick will drop mpg but not even really noticeable, maybe 1-2 tops between them.
the first thing is address your tranny, then you need a scanner that can get live data, can you get icp and ipr readings? max boost? etc.
also do you have any soot around the firewall behind the turbo? if so you are losing lots of potential power there,
how does the truck run empty? does it have good power?
how does the trans feel when cold? shift good? any slips?
for what its worth, i have 4.10's on 35's and typicly get 17-18 empty and 14-15 towing depending on the weight. i can haul heavy with no problem on flat ground but if i hit some of the nasty hills in my area you still have to put the pedal down to hold speed.
