I have an 88 ranger with electronic shift on the fly 4x4. But when i hit the button the 4x4 light dont go on or does the 4x4 engage.I checked the fuse and all the wire connections but dont know what to check next? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks...........RICH
The most common parts failures are probably the automatic locking hubs and the transfer case shift motor. To test the shift motor, push the 4x4 button (what ever happened to levers?), then crawl underneath and see if the front driveshaft will turn. If the shaft won't turn, then your transfer case is working correctly and the problem is likely the hubs. About the only way to REALLY fix that problem is a manual locking hub conversion. I have the Warn manual setup on my '94 and it works great. You do have to get out and lock the hubs, but isn't that part of having a 4x4?? Good luck.
I just re-read your post and saw that the light isn't coming on either. That could just be a bulb, but since your 4wd isn't working either it's doubtful. I would still try the "push the button then see if the front shaft is engaged" method because the light might not come on if the shift motor isn't engaging the transfer case. I'm not sure on that one. If the switch simply isn't doing anything, then the problem may be electrical. Again, good luck.
HEY THANKS for the info.I will try your idea tommorow after work, after all winter is coming and 4wd is a must.Oh yeah you said you converted to manual hubs. How much $$$ was the kit to convert??? again thanks 4 the help...........Rich
That's the same little sticky shift motor they put in the Explorer. If you hear a solenoid click when you hit the button (I don't know where the solenoid is on a Ranger),Your electronics are good. The light won't come on until it engages. On 2 out of 3 Explorers I've had the shift motor went bad, one I fixed by soaking in penetrating oil and stroking the mechanism(off the vehicle), the other I had to replace- $100 and something doing it myself. I've been shifting repeatedly in the driveway every week or so year round to keep it free, which I think is the key to it, as this one is still shifting good at 140,000 mi. These were all "wife" vehicles, and I don't think she has ever used 4wd in any of them and they just corrode up and stick. Good luck.
If I remember right, the hub conversion was about $200 including shipping from 4 Wheel Parts. I think Desert Rat may be a little cheaper, I'm not sure.
