Okay, here we go again..........92 F150 4X4. I am having problems with the rear diff. I think.......got the clunking, alot of play in the driveshaft, not up and down, but rotation wise. Replaced the ujoints a while back, (hence the "not up and down" play). And today it started this godawful squeak when I put it in reverse. But only in reverse. Anyway, in my travels under the truck, me and my creeper made it under the diff and were checking it out. Got the tag numbers but now I dont know what to do with them. They are as follows:
3 S844B
55 88 1k11
About the only thing that I can decifer is that it is a 8.8 inch rearend. Can anybody help me on this one???
Whats the axle code on the door post? I can tell you that id it has a letter in the code it has limited slip, then if it has a 9 following the letter then iit has 3.54's and if it has a 5 it has 4.10's
It's an 8.8 with 3.55 gears. The 55 in the lower row is part of the ratio, if you pull the bolt, you'll see the rest of the ratio stamped in there. If it had a limited slip, there would be a L before that 3.55, so the tag would read 3L55.
The door tag axle code is 19. I have a subscription to AllData, but of course, that is doing me absolutely no good. As far as the L/S thing goes......I had the back of it up on jack stands yesterday, and put it drive, and reverse etc, and one tire would spin for a sec, then the other tire would start to go. You know what I found funny, in drive it was the drivers side tire would spin first, and in reverse, is would be the passenger side.
Check the brakes on each wheel, you may have a brake drum that is hung up on the shoes. Just pull the drum off an make sure that the shoes are moving freely, the wheel cylinders are in good shape (no leakage). The rear brakes on my 86 with the 8.8 were shot when I got the truck, they made a heck of a noise while driving (grinding / squeaking) and the parking brake didn't always disengage.
