hey guys just by accident i ran in to a retired Ford tech
He said that you dont have to lift the cab to replace head bolts or to install headstuds.
here is how he said you can do it.
you have to take the front end off, than inner fenders. im sure there is more stuff on the top of the engine, but once thats clear, you unbolt the head bolts, and to keep them in the up position you use rubber bands to hold the bolts up just to clear the HG. than you take the head off whith the bolts in them. put new HG on and insert the Head studs in the head with rubber bands the same way that you took them out.
he said make sure you put anti seize compound in on the studs so you can take them out if needed...
now i dont know if this is a good way to do it, but im sure its doable and cost saving if you know what you doing....
if this was allready covered before just disregard this post, but i just wanted to share...

Thanks for sharing. Yes a few of us did it, without lifting cab, pulling motor and it is definitely doable, even without pulling the front end. The fender liner is a must though.
You can save a huge amount of money, and honestly, since I did it the "bond" between my truck and me is so much stronger. Now I know why and how she's running, I know the little noises, etc...
Someone posted up how they did it near step by step, but it's definately possible. Just takes a long time to disassemble everything. However it would save you a couple grand.
I have unfortunately done it without removing the front end, or fenderliners. The driver side head is kinda tricky to fish off the top of the motor but certainly doable and with one person.....
hated the job though.
It cost me the price of the head stud kit and $100 deductible. Still under warranty until Mar/09 or another 20 000 kms
Northern Auto Parts, Sioux City, IA has the best pricing on the net for ARP stud kits.
They also had my truck gone for nearly a month. Had a bunch of stuff done, head gaskets, new right side head, ICP sensor and a few others not worth mentioning.
The gasket on passenger side bank failed across #3 and #5 cylinders and began pressurizing the cooling system. Warped head and the beginnings of two burned exhaust valves on #5.
All together the service advisor said if it were not for the warranty I could have been on the hook for about $6500.00 parts and labour.

I have an 04 with 38000 miles on it. Would the dealer change the bolts out prior to head gasket failure? Seems like it is cheaper to do that than replace heads and possibly a motor from contamination.

Sure, if you're willing to pay their hourly rate. lol

Yeah, I don't think you can just go there and ask them to do it for you. If you have to take your truck in because of actual head gasket failure, than you can talk to the TECH directly, and some of them will be nice enough to do it so. I have no experience - because I did the headstuds for myself, but sometime they like if you make them worth the while doing it. Meant by this some money under the table...

Keep on truckin',

They did all that without raising the cab? That's kind of odd as it's not that much trouble for a shop to raise the cab.
