I don't own an Expedition but my Jeep is on it's last legs and I'm shopping. If you could, would you purchase another Expedition? What are the positives versus negatives of owning? I'm trying to get spun up on them and there is a lot of info. Thanks.
Our '99 is the 4.6L 8 seat model. We've had it about 7 years. It's still a pleasure to drive. It's me and the missus and the teen. But, it seldom leaves the drive with less than 5 or 6 people. It's got the solid axle out back. I really like that. Yes, I'd definitely get another. But, I'd probably drop a new engine and transmission in this one first. By the time I ready to get rid of it, they probably won't even be making them anymore.
Almost every day I wish I had my 2000 XLT Sport back. After it got wrecked (daughter and both friends came out fine, Expy not so good) we got the Mountaineer for better gas mileage. It does better on gas, but isn't nearly as comfortable on the road, I always seem to have to squirm around to get comfortable. The Expy pulled our boat a lot better, plus with the low range in the transfer case it was a lot easier getting up the really steep ramp we use. I've seriously considered trading my beloved Bronco in for a 2000-2003 Expy if I could find a nice one, but this idea has been vetoed by the Minister of Finance, so I'll just have to keep wishing.
Hi, recently traded my newer Explorer for a low milage expedition - 2001 with the 4.6 vice the 4.0 in the Explorer. Overall, yes I am satisfied. Would I do it again, not sure. The Explorer is a nice size, I think the cloth XLT seats are very good and in comparison, the 4.0 engine did fine. For me, about 6 foot tall, I didn't need running boards or handgrips to get in and out of the Explorer.
Again, not complaining, I have had bigger trucks, just saying overall a well equipped explorer is a nice size package - at least for me and a like enough size to most Jeep models.
On the highway the Expedition is smoother, larger and more solid. But there was nothing wrong with my 2003 Explorer, it tracked fine and drove well. Plus you can get the small V8 in an Explorer.
Yes. I owned a 2001 Expy EB and traded it in on a 2006 Expy EB. Great cars, although I think I preferred the '01 to '06. It seemed a bit more rugged and the '06 is kinda, well...prissy. Hence, the wife drives it and I got myself an F150. If you do get a '04 and up model bypass the stock Navigation. It sux.
My 98 Expedition has been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. I just turned 100,000 miles and it feels as good as the day I bought it new (just alot more power). So I would definitly buy another one if this one ever wears out.
Cudighi - In May I was in your postion... The wife and I have been married for 2 years and have no kids but will be having them in a year or two. We had a 2000 Jeep Cherokee with no problems but in the interest of the future we upgraded to a 2003 XLT for the huge amount of room and towing power. I've had 2 jeeps and would love to have another... but for practical and sensible reasons we took the plunge for the Expy. I would do it again, because of the room, towing, engine, and economic deals that you can get these cheap! The Jeep's are just too hard to get in and out of and me being 6 foot it gets a little cramped.
Now some info that I sadly neglected to pass on in my original post. I have a D***e Ram for towing and a Grand Caravan for touring. What I used the Jeep for was back and forth to work, some running in the woods, carting my two teenagers around. The oldest is now driving. I like the size of the Expedition (with size comes comfort) but, after reading totalrecall's post, maybe I should be looking at an Explorer. I would be using the Expy for the work vehicle. Please pass on any more info. You guys are great and this is all great information. Thanks.
Edit: One other thing, with that 4.6, does it feel underpowered? What is Fords old 318 motor?
I had a 1998 Expedition and a 2004 Navigator.I sold the Expedition but kept the Navigator due to the high gas prices. I would buy another. The Expedition had the 4.6 and it is under powered. Especially if you plan on doing some towing.
I have a 98 EB Expedition with the 5.4litre. I'm not sure if I'd do it again, it'd be a tough call between it and an Excursion, which I've been eyeing up for some time now. Also, my Expedition is not my daily driver, so I guess that is a factor. If it was, I'd probably go with another expedition over an excursion, but I need the ability to haul stuff.
Couple more comments - don't get a huge difference in MPG with the Explorer 4X4, you may hit 20 with mostly highway, but not going to be mid 20's or anything, when you commute to work, just not going to happen. I do really like the Explorer size and they are a dime a dozen used compared to what you pay new. However, if your MPG is average at best for size, then maybe get the Expedition if you want large.
For commuting the Explorer XLT is a good package. I can't fault the Excursion, as I had a 95 Diesel F250 and that really was nice!
Thanks and just my thoughts - if I knew what I really wanted I wouldn't have been trading vehicles to begin with!
I used to own a 1985 jeep grand wagoneer I loved to death literally lol. The room, comfort, dependability and 360 v-8 punch won my heart. I am a jeep fan now
I had never seen another I loved as much till the 2001 eb 4x4 5.4 I bought last year. The expy is all that and more with a bag of chips. It has oodles of power lots of room and feels solid going down the road. the comfort is the best I've ever had car or truck and the sound system (mach option) rock's the roof off.
Yeah, I'd get another Expy. Our 2000 EB 4x4 has been great, as long as you keep up with maintenance and repairs, and as it gets older, I find I have to do a little more underbody metal preservation, etc. But, it's paid for and is a great tow vehicle. I can tow and carry a lot of stuff and haul a lot of people with it on trips.
The only crazy thing I ever did with this truck on the day I brought it home for my wife was weld the class III trailer hitch to the frame for safety reasons: Years ago I had welded and installed doubler plates on a hitch that I installed on our '94 Plymouth Voyager and it ended up saving my 4mo pregnant wife and 1 yr old son when they were rear ended at a stop light by a drunk driver going 60 mph. My insurance company and the body shop guys couldn't believe what they saw under the van, the intact hitch save their lives. After that, she wouldn't drive anything at all for months until I bought her a bigger, safer truck and the Expy fit the bill. And the minute I drove it home into the garage ... there she was standing with that welding stick in her hand and the arc welder already turned on telling me to get under the truck and weld the hitch. She feels very safe in that Expy now, so I ain't ever selling it. I only get one chance to protect my own I guess. Pity the fool - like the last guy - that rear ends that truck now.
