My 85 f150 with a 302 efi will start right up when cold, but when it is warm (after driving it for awhile), it does not like to start back up. It usually just keeps cranking for a long while. Is it the coil?
To test the coil, get a spare plug (any will do) and open up the gap to about 1/8". Then next time you stop with the engine hot, stick this plug in the coil wire and rest it on a good ground. Have someone else crank the engine so you can watch the plug and see if it sparks hotly. Best to do this in shade so you can see the spark.
But if it were the coil, you would think it wouldn't work again till it cooled off significantly which would take more than a few minutes.
A stock coil is quite adequate. The Duraspark is a very good system.
Ditto on the Duraspark. It is not only a good system, but the whole system or repair parts are laying around every junk yard in the country and can be had for a song.
As far as junkyard Durasparks are concerned, beware of their worn out upper bushing-they only have one. We utilize a full length oil impreganted bronze bushing in our Durasparks. This improves timing accuracy and it will be more durable for you. Junkyard Durasparks also can have worn out advance mechanisms.
