Excessive heat...

My system is all Alpine
IVA-W505 head unit
KCE-350BT bluetooth
KCA SC100 Sirius satellite radio
KCE-422I Ipod cable
PMD-200 Blackbird navigation

Stock speakers for now.

I first noticed this two weeks ago, I drove about 100 miles up to the cabin and we made a stop at Walmart. While the wife was inside I figured I would try to load a new wallpaper into my head unit. I inserted the disk and and went thru 4 or 5 different ones when the unit quit working and said I had a disk error. I ejected the disk and it was really hot. Twenty minutes later I got to the cabin and tried to show someone my new nav system and it would not fire up either. Later on the way home it work fine.

Last night on the way home the nav system reset itself twice on a trip home from Edmonton to Calgary (about 3 hrs). Did not use the DVD just listening to the radio.

What do you guys think? Excessive heat or POS. I don't want to slag Alpine but the reviews I have read on line make me thing I bought the wrong Nav unit.

I haven't had a newer alpine heat up but it did happen on the older ones. In your 250, did yours come with padding under and in the dash? My 03 didn't but my 04 did. That might be an issue. I would also look and make sure there isn't any blocked vents in the deck. If everything you have listed is in the dash there might not be enough airflow around the deck.

Did you install the deck or have it done?

I had it installed at Pacific sound and video in Minot, ND. I have not tried to pull it apart. I would not have the foggiest idea where to start. I am not afraid to try but not sure where to start.

I installed my windshield mounted sat radio and ran the antenna up thru the head liner. So I could take the dash apart if I had some guidance.

BY the way when I pulled the head liner and a - pillar off I broke some of the small spring steel clips...$10 each to replace them from Ford. The big plastic push pins that hold the head liner to the roof ... $10 each as well.

Enough raving about Ford part, the system is 2 months old should I try to take it to a shop in Calgary or look at it myself.

If the system is 2 months old then hell yeah I would take it back in. Any good shop will be able to rectify this.

At worse case they can add a fan to help cool it. But I would like to see them fix it with adding a possibility of extra noise in the cab.

Given where you live, I don't see this as a climate issue.

While I make arrangements to get this system looked at, I have a couple of questions

Would the built in amp generate the majority of the heat in this system?
Would installation of a standalone amp improve this?

It will add to the heat... But not likely to be the cause of the problem....
See what the shop says and go from there

I am pulling out my head unit and nav system and sending them back to the dealer. I spoke to a couple of different dealers and one said that they have sent three back to have the both units repaired and updated. They say that the head unti generates to much heat and cooks the nav system. I should know more in a couple of weeks.

Yes the amp, the motor and the processors are going to be the main sources of heat. If you have a short or low impedance in the speakers it could cause excess heat, but most likely it's a cooling problem. Insufficient heat sinks or heat sink contact, or lack of air flow around the sinks.

The shop should probably double check the speakers.
