New poster to FTE but have been lurking for months researching all the great info on this site, thank you. Need your help to make sure I get this right the first time.
Got a 2002 F350 7.3 4X4 Auto DRW and as far as I can figure it's running about 235 hp with a massive tranny cooler.
Followed your advice and installed a quad pod with EGT, trans temp and boost gauges. Final hole will be for the DP Tuner w/codes.
Aside from work on the farm the trucks biggest job is hauling 12,000lbs of 5th wheel for camping. Have had no issues tugging the 5ver on the prairies but we like to camp in the Rockies and on our only trip a couple of weeks ago climbing saw EGT temps of 1200 and trans temps of 205 causing me to get off the go. Boost never went above 20lbs. I also would like the ability of getting more performance (no load) when the neighbours in the GM's and Dodge's meet me on the roads around here.
I found Strokin_it7.3's mod list of a while back and using it as a guide will be installing an AFE Stage 2 intake, MBRP 4" single exhaust, High pressure oil rail crossover, Extreme Diesel's x-wheel compressor wheel for the turbo. I then want to drop in a BTS VB and Mag-Hytec trans pan for the tranny before connecting the tuner.
What tunes would you suggest for what I have in mind? So far I'm thinking stock, hi-idle 1100, 60hp tow, 80 econ and 140 aggressive, (60/80/140 w/code)
Will the above mods and the addition of a 140 hp aggressive (for those country road meetings) put me over the safe 400 hp limit for this engine causing a possible boom?
Sorry for all the but I guess I'm hoping that I'm headed in the right direction before I break the piggy bank or my toy.
I would say that you be safe with those mods. You'll need to watch EGTs as with a tuner you can easily go above that 1200* mark. Still, you won't be nearing the 400hp mark I wouldn't think.
welcome to FTE...once you put in that AFE stage II and the 4"inch exhaust you will see a little better EGT's as well as a little more power.the BTS VB as well as the DP will help the trans temp....looks like you done your home work...good job...
Very impressed with your research! You are definitely on the right path......I wouldn't worry about the 400 hp mark, you'll be creeping into the low 300's with that list of mods. Only way to approach 400hp is with injectors, bigger turbo, dual hpop, and assorted other things. You'll be plenty powerful compared to your truck now with what you've talked about getting......keep us posted!
When you get your DP Tuner, be sure to tell them the elevation you live at, and where you'll be towing. I live at ~5300' near Denver but go up to 11,000' in the Rockies. I talked with Diane and went with the 40Tow tune b/c of the altitude. No sense in risking an entire engine with the thin air.
You should be under 400hp with those mods, but that's still not necesarily guaranteeing you will avoid a kaboom. If you liked my old thread, you should see my newest one.
Well, your thread help answer my question also. Good post and welcome to FTE. Ordering mine this week and i,m thinking ,stock, 1100 high idle, 60 tow, 80 econo, 120 race, 140 agressive and maybe 55 valet(for my oldest) when he drives. Still researching the tunes though. I'll start another thread as not to hi-jack yours....
It was truck 2 of 3 that I was interested in. The girls in the house liked this one the best. I liked low mileage for the price, closest comparable truck in Canada was in Truro, Nova Scotia. The mods I'm going to do will help when we haul the trailer through Kamloops on our way to Vancouver Island next fall for the winter.
Welcome to FTE. Glad you decided to join in the conversation.
To help you feel better about it, remember the trucks with the 4100 were detuned by Ford to keep from killing the tranny. The stick shift was rated at 275 hp in 02.
It sounds like you've done your homework. With what you're planning I think you'll be fine. The only question is, can you stop there?
