Got the glowplugs in today. Anybody have a write-up of how to remove valve covers/ install plugs. What all am i going to need to remove to install them.... REALLY hoping i don't have to pull all of the turbo part of the intake off (it was a biatch to get on). Just looking for suggestions on what to look for while i'm in there (planning on retorquing rockers and injectors). Thanks in advace
You'll need to pull your intake, the IC tubes, and move some rad hoses on the passenger side. The driver's side is easy, the passenger side is a bit of a pain. The glow plugs take a 10mm deep well socket, and make sure to have a length of some sort of tubing on hand that fits snugly on the end of the glow plug to lift them out. Some of the injector and rocker bolts can be a PITA to reach especially on the passenger side- a wobble joint is your friend.
I was going to do a write-up when I installed mine but figured it had been beat to death here already... I guess I should have done it (bad me). Good luck, let us know how it goes.
Guzzle has a good write up on his web page. I used it to do mine last weekend. All I took off was the IC tube on both sides, intake up to the turbo and that is it. The passenger side is a pain and you will need a good swivel to get to the VC bolts. I used a 1/4 drive ratchet, extensions and swivel as all this stuff is really small torque values and everthing is in very confined quarters. A hint on the passenger side....once the VC bolts are out, lift the rear of the VC and slide back. Then lift the front and work it out. Make sure you wipe down any dirt above the VC.s before you pull them because you will knock the dirt into the head if you don't while pulling off the VC's. The plugs are easy to change, but it is a pita to get to them. I had 6 of 8 completly bad. No surprise it was giving me a fit at the end of winter last year. Make sure to check you UVC wiring for chaffing while you are there.
It's easier than it looks. Once you get the CAC tubes and the intake boot off, there is a lot more room to work with.
One thing that wasn't mentioned is the plug on the left side. It is held down with that bolt in the middle. Remove the bolt and the whole plug will walk out with the bolt, with the bolt remaining in the left half of the plug.
I am speaking as if you are sitting in the driver's seat looking forward, so left half is really on the right side while you are working on it.
Big square box with wires coming out of it. Don't worry, you can't miss it. Dan's right. It's not really that hard, but as Chase alluded to, you'll find yourself wondering who the fool was that designed it this way. There's a couple of bolts on the VC that you just kind of have to get out (and back in) by feel.
The reason for the tubing is because if you try to unscrew the glow plug all the way with the socket, the socket will get wedged in by the rocker pedestal. Other than that, it's about as difficult as changing a spark plug.
Yea i read the thread with the tubing suggestion in it... already got the tubing. I know what plug hes talking about now... i was assuming a grommet with a bolt in it or somethig like that. I'm good with feel haha i installed the HPX last night at 9pm with no light at all.. checked this morning no leaks haha. Well, got something to do this weekend now lol

The plug kwik is referring to is the big wire harness plug on the left VC. It's got 2 studs on the VC that hold it in place, you end up removing 2 nuts then 2 studs (same size socket). The oil dipstick tube on the pass. side is also held on with a stud.
On the passenger side valve cover you can reach the last two bolts on the bottom near the firewall through the wheel well if you take the tire/rim off. I used a wrench and it was pretty easy.

I didn't think of trying that, I just used a wobble joint and a bunch of extensions. Good to know though! The biggest PITA was the rear one on the pass side, but with some smooth talking and contortionism I was able to get it in and out without much incident.
