Fuel filter cap removal tool

I bought a special little too for just this purpose and somehow lost it. So, aside from a big ol' oil filter wrench, what special purpose tools have you seen for this job? I keep a 3/8" ratchet/socket set in the truck at all times, so something that would work off that would be ideal. Thanks all!!

Wondering if we couldn't fab something up that would work with a ratchet and socket?

I run a 150,000 sq ft machine shop.....

Scott - first let me say that you are a blessing to all who know you, even if only via this forum. The hub bearing lube tool you made & shipped out... incredible.

As for making a tool for this, here are my thoughts:

Flat 1/4" thick x 3/4" wide bar stock
the ends somewhat rounded (to protect the innocent!)
square hole in the center for 3/8" drive (extension bar most likely)
a pair of 'metal pizza wedges' at either end to fit in the notches (1/8" thick?)

I like really simple, only fits one way tools at times, and that's my idea. I don't have CAD/CAM software, but those are my thoughts

I'm not a machinist either, so if my ideas flat-out stink, well, I'm a big boy, I can take it!!

Even if this goes nowhere, a HUGE thanks for even offering!!

Thanks, Brendan. I really appreciate that compliment.

I have an extra cap at home. I am going to take some measurements and see what we can come up with and no, your idea doesn't stink. It's quite good actually and doable. The only thing I would change is the square hole. I would go with a hex nut welded to the center. That way a socket could fit over it. The square hole is a little more involved to machine and isn't government job friendly, if you know what I mean.

Just saying what I'm sure everyone else would agree with....and it's been earned MANY times over.

By all means, let's keep it "gov't friendly"!! to be funny you could make the nut the size commonly used for spark plugs, since we all need to carry that size wrench/socket....

Short of having the right tool for the job... I use a pair of channel locks opened up wide and placed in the web. Works perfectly. Burping the pressure out of the bowl with the drain valve before lossening also helps a lot.

A large open end wrench works great...just stick the open end down between the webs and put a screwdriver thru the closed end and turn.

Guys, we've all got tools and 'workarounds' - the point of this thread is to find a special made tool for doing the job. Or maybe Scott will be able to get something made. I've got 3 different ways to change mine filter, so I'm good there. Thanks for the suggestions from you both, but let's keep it on point and help me find a purdy, shiny new tool...

Big channel locks. Hold them upside down and stick the jaws into the little grooves ontop of the filter. Twist.

"special made tool for doing the job"

What language is that? I don't think I've ever seen those words in that order... they seem to imply a method not involving bandaids...
