Which tires?

I am looking to replace my stock 275/70R18 Continentals with either 275/70R18 Michelin LTX AT/2 or 285/65R18 BFG TA KO's. The BFG's will cost me about $175.00 more, plus since the overall diameter is a tad smaller, my effective gear ratio goes up a little which means RPM's go up a little at the same speed meaning slightly less MPG's. Does anybody have any experience with the Michelin's? I've always heard they are a great tire, just pricey, but in this case they aren't. I had BFG's on my old truck and loved them. They will be used for mostly city/highway driving with the occasional camping/hunting offroad trip. Thanks for the input!

Michelins for the most part are good tires, however if you liked your old bfg's, nothing wrong with going back to them.

if you live where it snows, The BFG's would be a better choice but they are noisy compared to the other two types when on dry pavement.
I know there isn't much of a choice for E rated 18's.
I like the Conti's for dry Highway use.

I liked my old BFG's, but the problem with the new ones is that they are more expensive, and a different size meaning I will have to recalibrate the speedo and I'm not sure what they will do to my mileage since they change my rear end ratio a little.

I live in Arlington, TX so I don't have to worry much about snow, but I do have to drive in rain during the summer months.

Thanks for the replies!

I just went thru the whole tire debate myself and it gave me a huge headache trying to decide which brand to buy. I wanted a set of nitto terra grapplers but you can't find them around where i live w/out having to order them. I ended up going w/ the new goodyear silent armor wranglers b/c i just happened to walk into a place that running a 'buy 3 get the 4th free' deal and that seemed alot more appealing to me than dropping $1300 on the BFG AT's and an alignment. I have to say that i am definitely pleased w/ them so far, they are fairly aggressive looking, ride great, and are quiet. I'd definitely look into them if you want a 275/70/18 E rated tire, i think they were $255 a tire. Good luck!

Nut1605, I have 275/70R18 Michelin LTX AT/2 on my ride, and for the highway they have been great. hunting season is just getting into full swing in Utah so I have been off road with them latley, and have not been that happy with them. They don't grip as well as I would like. I'm going to replace them with something a little more aggresive.
Send me a PM and will talk, Im looking to sell mine.

Thumbs up

There is no substitute for the BFG All Terrains for an overall tire.Spend the extra and got with them.Ihad them on my last 3 trucks and averaged between 48k aqnd 60,000 miles on a 1 ton truck.

I thought about going with the Silent Armor's except they weren't getting that great of reviews on Tire Rack's website from guys with big trucks. The Michelin's seem to be a little better rated than the BFG's, but I love the BFG's, that's why I am torn. Thanks for the advice guys, I appreciate it!

Does anybody else have any experience running the Goodyear Silent Armor's? I like a little bit of an aggressive looking tire, and I'm afraid the Michelin's just aren't going to cut it. I want the BFG's, but the $1,300.00 plus the $65 something to recalibrate the speedometer and then whatever it's going to cost to get it aligned is adding up. What does it cost to align these trucks anyway? Why is picking new tires such a headache? Thanks!

I have the silent armours, and they are great for the most part. I have found I miss the grip in muddier conditions that the mt/r's I had before provided.

Thanks for the input on the Silent Armors. I don't encounter too much mud, so I'm not too worried about mud traction. I do need to have good traction on wet/dry pavement as well as dirt/gravel roads. I obviously would like a nice ride with a solid feel to the tire, not like I'm skating across the road. The price tag is attractive too, maybe I will go check them out. Thanks again guys.

Well, I can comment on the wet/dry pavement, and the dirt and gravel roads too. Excellent on all accounts, good in snow, and good on the ice too.

My only beef is in the mud, but I have to remind myself that they are not a mud tire either.

You will love the longevity of them too.

I have 325/60R18 Silent Armor Pro Grades on my 07, mounted on 18x8.5" Weld wheels. 33,200 miles on them right now. Have just under half tread left (using 2/32" as a "no tread" baseline). Rotate every 5-6k, wearing even, great in rain and snow.

Not a mud tire.....but I've towed 10,000lbs out of the mud without issue after getting caught in the back of a jobsite during a downpour.

Here's a pic of the tread from within the last 1,000 miles:
