They are similar but not the same, i know one difference is the way the tailgate locks, they updated the locking mechanism some time not sure when though. But other than that i cant seem to tell much of a difference between the two.

Basically they are the same, but there are small differences. I would put a 96 box on an 87 but not vice versa.

aforementioned tailgate latch. and the body line over the wheel well is smooth on the '92-97 boxes. 80-92 boxes have a small indent over the wheel well that follows the bodyline on the bottom of the vehicles.

well i want to do a dually conversion on my truck and the inside of my bed is beat to hell like someone was loading crushed concreete in the bed out of a front end loader from 10 ft up, i found a compleet 87 1 ton dualy without a motor and trans for $500 with a good body i could get the dually rear axle d60 front and a good bed and get most of my money back from scrap.

You could work over the bed and it would look original. For that price, you'll probably come out money ahead when all is said and done.

what all would have to be re worked to match, looking at the pictures it looks like the majority of the differences are in the front clip.

I would buy it regardless. Sell the front axle for $1000 then you can buy what ever bed you want and still scrap the frame and what ever else you don't want/sell and get about $400 in scrap.

There are some body side moldings the older trucks have that the newer ones don't so you'll have some holes to fill in. Other than that everything should line up and look fine.
