found a 1992 7.3L in a F250 custom. 187,000 mi and a 5spd what would be a common problem with these motors that would make it run rough. if its nothing major, would like to purchase this truck as a farm truck
what is your version of running rough? could be timing, could be air filter, could be compression, could be fuel filter. does it knock and rattle like its about to blow or does it just have a little bit of a rattle
If the injectors and return lines between are grey painted they are OEM......OLD.
If the filter is old/plugged fuel starvation should light the "filter" dash light.......
If the manual lift fuel pump is worn out.......lack of fuel to IP could be the problem.
Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when starter cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of starter engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose. When all finished hook up the FSS wire .
Are there any loud chuffing noises at the exhaust.... bad exhaust valve..
Air cleaner off are there any LOUD woof woof noises at the intake.. bad intake valve,.... The normal sound of pistons sucking air will not be loud........
How much fuel in the tank selected........
If there are no really noticeable abnormal noises it is tough to diagnose.
You say 5 speed.........not sure if a bad clutch ....Dual Mass Flywheel would effect the engine that bad...... anyone know for sure????
if i could tell you the noises, i would. i will call the guy today and find out. its a truck for sale and i havent heard it run... just wondering how hard it would be to fix, but i guess i have some homework to do in that case
it could be a guy whos just not diesel savy, and things its running rough. the guy we bought our 6.9 from said it ran rougher than hell. started it up and it purred like a kitten
