my truck is a 91 f-350 crew cab w/ 7.3 idi just got it this past spring. truck works great and is used daily on the construction site. heres my problem after shutting truck off you can see fuel dripping off the oil pan area of the engine. its really hard to figure where it is coming from best i can tell seems to be coming from on top of the engine around the injector lines coming from maybe the injector pump at the top front of engine. im no diesel mechanic this is my first do you guys think its possible that the nuts on the injector lines at the pump are leaking and is this a common problem and any suggestions as to how to best tighten them. seems pretty hard to get to the nuts you can see them fine and i think its a lower line but cant figure how to get a tool in there. thanks guys
There are many places where it could be leaking. Best thing is to clean the area extremely well when engine is stone cold. run engine at idle and see if you can see fuel dripping somewhere. The fan can send fuel everywhere so might be seemingly be in one area when the fan has sent the fuel from somewhere else.
It could be even a fuel line from the fuel filter to IP.
Last year I had fuel dripping off the bottom of my engine too. It was hard to trace back since it was flowing down the back of the engine. I then noticed a pool of diesel fuel on the rear passenger side of the engine, where the glowplug sits, that little cup. My return line was leaking, filling up the pool then draining off the back of the motor. Got a return line kit and it fixxed the leaking and hard starts. I drove over 1000km with this happening. My fuel milage increased after fix.

come to think of it i too have the hard start problem and my son tends to think it too is leaking down the back of the passenger side block. was this return line fix a big deal? and how did spy the problem I hate sound silly but i found by asking i get on the fix trail quicker. thanks Bob
This problem is a classic "air intrusion" problem. If the return lines are painted "gray" they are origianl equip and a total replacement of those lines are needed. do a search for "air intrusion" you'll find many threads on this.
Most leak air in making a very hard start problem and only a very few leak fuel.

Just did the return lines on my 6.9 a few days ago. It took me less than 45 minutes total. Just make sure the caps snap into place, or you will have a leak for sure. I found that hardest part, was removing the old o-rings. Luckily, they were brittle enough for me to grab them with some small needle nose pliers. They pulled off quite easily. You just have to make sure, that you don't damage the injector at all.
Also, use some grease (Sparingly) on the new o-rings. It helps them slide on easily. Another tip, is to put the upper o-ring on first. Then, you can slide the bottom one right over it. They don't give you any extra parts in the kit, so be careful.
One last thing.. I priced the kit at NAPA and was quoted $95. I ordered the SAME kit from adiesel.com for 24.75. The 7.3 kit is 24.92. It's called the injector install kit. Click me!
When you replace the return lines, replace all the rubber hoses, the return tees and all of the O rings.
When you drive the truck, hot fuel makes the O rings hard in a couple hundred miles.
If the retun lines are not disturbed, they will not leak.
But if you only change the ones leaking, that will disturb the ones next to them enough that they will start leaking.
Then you will be chasing leaks forever.
