I just rebuilt the C4 that was swapped in my Bronco II and it wont go into reverse. It will engage in first and second gear but it takes a few seconds for them to grab. Third will engage if the engine is revved up some. I put everything back together correct and adjusted the bands correctly. What is the problem here? I am lost. I have looked at the repair book I bought several times and have thought of everything it might be, but I have come up empty handed. Any ideas?
Its been a while since I have been in a C4, It appears that you are having problems with everything.
Reverse is the rear band and the direct drum ( one behind the pump ). First is the forward drum only, and second is the front band and the forward drum, third is the direct drum and the forward drum
I would look in the valve body first, I cant remember but does it have a ball and spring under the filter tab? If so the ball goes in first then the spring against the filter.
If that's ok check the pressure regulator valve. If you pull the valve body off you can air check everything, the book should have a air check location for you.
I had the same exact problem and i had rebuilt the valve body with some springs backwards......man i dissasembled the tranny like 4 times till i decided to change the whole valve thing...
I am going to take the pan off today and pull off the valve body. I found out how to air check everything so I will do that first. Does anyone know where I can find a valve body diagram?(one that shows where each valve and spring goes and in what direction. the repair Haynes book I got doesnt show that.) I took it apart one section at a time and put it back together the same way...I think. The tranny came out of a 1974 econoline van if I remember right.
Ok, I figured out what was wrong with it. Apparently, when I put the valve body back together, one of the check ***** went in the wrong spot. So I moved it in the right spot and it works now, but I have another problem. When put in third gear, the transmission will only stay in first. It will not up**** to second or third. First and second gears both work as well as reverse. What is wrong this time?
Nope, the vacuum modulator is in there along with the rod. Is there any way to test to see if the modulator is bad? It is for sure getting vacuum to it. And for the kickdown rod, it doesnt have one. The guy who I bought the Bronco II frommade the swap and just decided he would manually shift it because it would be too hard to fab one up.
Also, what is the total fluid capacity of the C4 and torque converter from a complete rebuild. The previous owner also didnt have a dipstick. So I have no clue where full it. I have put a total of 11 quarts in it, which includes the torque converter. Am I close?
