I have a 1979 F-250 4x4 Ranger. I am wondering what engine I have in it. I thought it was a 400 c.i. but someone told me that Ford did not make the 400 that Dodge made that engine.
If it's the original engine and a V8, then it is a 351M or the 400. I don't remember Dodge ever having a 400? GM had one.
Dodge had one, it was a B engine using the shorter version of the Big Block like the 361 and 383 did. RB engines were the 413,426,440. It came in the 70's big cars.
I think just about all of the Big three mad a 400 at one time.

CACA del TORO!
Ford hasn't bought an engine from Dodge since 1912!
And..back then, the Dodge Brothers owned a large machine shop in Detroit, and made Model T engines for Ford under a contract.
When Henry bought out the Dodge's contract, the two brothers used the money to go into the car biz...in 1914.
After the Dodge Brothers died, the company was sold to Walter P. Chrysler in 1929.
1977/79 F100/350 4WD engine availability:
300 I-6 ~ VIN engine code B / 351M 2V ~ VIN engine code H / 400 2V ~ VIN engine code S.
The engine code is the 4th digit of the VIN.
EZ way to ID: The 351M's & 400's have 8 valve cover bolts per side.
Someone told me the v.i.n. would identify the differential codes and transmission. The site I used did not do that. Can some decode my entire v.i.n. number or give me a site where I can do that. I used one that only decoded the manufacture plant location, the type of truck, and the engine size.

Can some decode my entire v.i.n. number or give me a site where I can do that. I used one that only decoded the manufacture plant location, the type of truck, and the engine size.
Someone told you wrong.
You will not find the Axle or Trans code in any VIN, regardless of what year the vehicle is, or what type of vehicle it is.
1964/80 F Series trucks: The AXLE & TRANS codes are located on the Warranty Plate, located on the left door face below the latch.
Post the info here.
I have decoded over 600 VIN's and Warranty Plates on FTE. I use the parts catalog to decode VIN's and the codes off the Warranty Plate, not some decode book that's prolly wrong.
Dr. Dirt: There's no such thing as a 400 engine with a 4V carb. They're all 2V's.
