Hey everyone. Great site. I've got an 86' f250 ext cab 2wd w/a 351w. Here's my problem. When I'm driving for a little while the brakes start to lose braking power and i have to push harder to slow down. It smells like somethings burning, i'm thinking the front pads are dragging. Also after driving awhile it almost feels like the front end is bouncing up and down. This stops after sitting for about 10-15 minutes, but starts back up again after a few miles of constant speed. Do you think dragging brakes would cause these problems? If not, any suggestions? Any input is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Short
The parking brake cables sticking. This will cause the rear brakes to drag.
The front calipers sticking. This will cause the front brakes to drag.
After driving it, and it starts bogging, pull off the road and feel each wheel with your hand. If you have some that are hot to the touch, then those are the ones dragging.
yep. parking brake cable got me. I thought it was the front end for sure, but it was the rear brakes melting off. I noticed it was random, then figured out it was only when i set my emergency brake that it happened.
Well it's got new rear shoes/wheel cylinders and master cylinder, and I have the ebrake disconnected cause that's happened to me before on something else
sometimes old rubber hoses can deteriorate on the inside and the rubber can act like a one way valve trapping pressure against the brakes. you may have one to the back brakes to, im not sure, but always a posibility. but if all are geting hot its not likely they would all have this problem. master cylinder would be more logical as Franklin2 said.
