Post auto-hub test

I suspect that my auto-hubs are faulty; neither front wheel would spin when I was stuck in snow and in 4WD the other day. I did some tests to confirm this, and would appreciate some feedback on if you agree.

TESTS:
1. My front drive shaft turns when truck is moving in 4WD.
2. With the truck in 4WD, turned off, and in Park, I jacked up one front wheel and turned it by hand; the drive shaft didn't turn. I then put that wheel down and did the same with the other wheel; the drive shaft didn't turn. (Note: I didn't raise both wheels at the same time and do this - not sure if that matters)

QUESTIONS:
1. Does this sound like the auto-hubs are shot?
2. Is it normal for both to go out like that?
3. Could this be something minor that I could fix, or should I just convert to manual hubs like so many other posts seem to suggest?

Thanks very much for any help.

sounds to me like you've already figured it out yourself. The same thing happened to me two weeks ago. It was the excuse i was looking for to convert over to the warn premium hubs. I would recomend that you do the same. I wouldn't even consider any other brand of hubs.

Good luck
Ryan

Thanks for the reply Ryan.

How long did it take you to do the auto to manual hub conversion? Eg: How big of a job was it?

if you already know how to take apart your auto hubs you can probably do it in about an hour. If you need to learn to disasemble your auto hubs plan on two hours. Its not that hard at all. The hardest part is getting the first snap ring out.

Hank,
Here is Tony's DIY for the Warn manual hub installation:
http://personal.rdu.bellsouth.net/rdu/t/g/tgaunce/bronco/warn_manuals/warn_hubs.html

Thanks to Tony!

BTW, you can use small flat bladed screwdriver's to remove those snap rings or but a dental tool type pick set at wal mart for $5.00
you'll need the correct ford hub socket and torque wrench (slightly over 150 lbs..160 ft lbs)
and a torx bit to remove the hub cover screws

if you have the 3 torx screw hub cover, you'll need the warn conversion kit too; llok here for part numbers..check pep biys, napa, etc for prices..some buy at e bay too:
