Front wheel bearings..

I need to get at my front wheel bearings, to repack 'em, etc.. There is a Ford manual locking hub between me and the bearings, so how do i get at them, to do the work? Is it an easy job, and is there an online set of instructions anywhere?

Front wheel bearings..

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Jan-02 AT 12:13 PM (EST)]Hey! Well that all depends on the type of your hubs? Manual or Auto? (Ill cover both) And also what type of axle you have. I would assume that its on your F-450 and you have stated that you have a manual hub. I have not worked on one tons that much so I am going to tell you how to get the hubs out of a 1/2 ton. Cant really see much diffenence between the two...just size. OK....well first you have to take the allen bolts out of the hub. Take the outer hub (with dial on the Manual) off. Comes off in all one part. What you need to do is get a good dental pick and a small flathead screwdriver. And a set of snapring pliers. Their is a metal O-ring that is sitting in a recess where the hup just pulled out of. Get your pick and your driver and pry it out. The autos take some time to get this out due to the fact that they stick out so far. On the manuals....its pretty easy. Then there is a snapring on the axle shaft that is easily removed with the snap ring pliers. After that, install two of the alllen bolts and use them to pull the inner hub out. Some times it sticks but take your time and DONT force anything. Once you get that out, your going to need a spanner socket to get the spindle nut off. You can get this at any parts store. You will need this if you ever do any work on your axle. You just insert the socket onto the spindle nut and take it off. This should let the rotor pull off. BUT if it doesnt, it might be like the older Mono Dana 44 axles ran in the 70's. It has two spindle nuts seporated by a washer. You can tell this from all the holes in the washer. What you need to do is take the washer out with the pick...sometimes its not easy but just keep working at it. Then you can get to the inner spindle nut. Take that off and then you can take the rotor and bearings out. There you go......hope i helped....O yeah....if any that acutlly have expenience in one tons, feel free to correct me.
