i havent used my boat in a couple of months now. i take it out the other night, dump it in the water etc...... i go and park the truck and my buddy is like your steering wheel isnt turning...
the steering wheel doesnt turn either way,not even a qtr inch. i cant move the engine from side to side either with my hands.
i noticed the rod that the engine slides across on doesnt have any lub on it what soever. must have come off in the rain and sun combined over the lst couple of months?
my question,if theres no lube on those rods, could it cause the whole steering wheel to seize? not move what so ever?
it has a nipple where i can put the hose on and pump in greese (which i did in the beginning this year)
or do i have some other issue that i dont know of (which isnt hard, believe me)
the grease on the telaflex cable in the engine mount has hardened up and seized the cable.
you may be able to free it by pumping it full of grease.
otherwise, i cant tell you how to loosen it up. mine has been locked up for around 8 years now. i don't have the time to use the boat, so i never tried to free it up.
If you have a torch, put a rosebud on it and warm it up. That should melt the hardened lube enough to allow the new grease to flow through. Good luck man.
Im assuming outboard right? you are going to have to replace the steering cable or the gear housing under the dash, disconnect and make sure the steering shaft has in fact frozen.
Same thing was wrong with a project boat i bought 15 years ago... I just bought a new one ! You know how hard it is to find a push-pull stearing controll cable in AZ?
I found one in Florida though! works real good and nobuddy has one like it around here
A buddy's boat did that all the time because he wasn't using marine grease to keep it lubed, you can try to get someone to turn the wheel while you turn the motor the same way and if it breaks loose grease it with marine grease do you have the teleflex greasing coupling for the cable if not I would get one.
