I have a 360 and C6 in front of an NP 203 transfer case. I'm looking at rebuilding this truck as stock, with maybe one exception. I have already turned one 360 into a 390 and was impressed, to say the least, with the lugging power difference. Will the NP 203 handle the extra torque and power of a 390 without noticablly increased wear, or should I stick with the 360 and just change to an RV cam to add some low-end grunt? I don't really want to change transfer cases (and drive shafts, shifters, etc), but would like to add some engine gusto. Thanks to all.
that np203 is one of the strongest and will hold up fine to that 390, i just helped a friend install on on his k5 blazer and he is runnin a 350ho that puts out 333hp and so much torque that it broke and engine mount and a tranny.
Well, I wouldn't call any x-case that uses a chain instead of gears as "one of the strongest", but there wont be a stress problem going from a 360 to a 390 with that unit.
I have had 400 hp and 400 ftlb at the wheels through a C6 and NP203 with no problem at all, in extreme rock crawling in Moab.. I sure miss that truck.

Agreed, one of the strongest, side note, any new 'case you get these days, (except the Rockwell and Atlas, although there may be another) has a chain driven front output, just make sure to keep the fluid clean and topped off-you won't have any problems unless you have extreme chain stretch. You'll know if you do by a "popping" sound when under power in 4 lo-loc or 4 hi-loc. This would be the chain jumping and the chain should be replaced ASAP. This really only happens when abused alot or has a zillion off-road miles.
Thanks to all. As I stated, or meant to, I'm not planning on much more than a stock rebuild, so even if/when I up to a 390, it will be basically a stock engine, bored .030 bigger, with maybe an RV cam (I want more torque, especially low end, but DO NOT want to stress the valvetrain). I won't use this truck for much towing, and my offroad use will be limited, so the chain wear shouldn't be excessive.
Now, I'm going to go dismantle the steering column on my other truck, in the parking lot at work, so I can replace the shift collar, which is now in three pieces (I thought it was shifting kind of funny...).
