I just installed a set of Superwinch manual hubs. The job went good and the hubs are super easy to turn in the locked position and back to free. And 1/4 turn too.
The one thing that didn't work out is that I couldn't get the snap ring on that goes on the axle stub shaft. I did not need but about another 1/8" and it would have had the needed clearance. I got the large internal snap ring in, but the hub body has space to slide in and out a little bit with only the large snap ring in place.
I tried prying the axle shaft forward with a pry bar at the uni-joint.
There seems to be no extra clearance to have. Is it OK for the hub body to have that in and out free-play, about 3/16 inch.
What vehicle? I tried to put Mile Marker hubs on my Bronco and had the same problem. The outer snap ring needed another 1/8" or so to go on. I ended up just putting the autos back on in the mean time.
if you are talking about the snap ring that goes on the stub shaft have no worries. i had the same problem on mine as well as seen dozens of other trucks that cant get the snap rings on. and none of us have had any problems not runnin them. me and my buddy go wheelin about every other week and neither of us has had a problem.

How could you go into the hubs and NOT grease the wheel bearings? You should also check & repack the spindle bearings and put in new seals for both.
On the new hubs, after installation I drove the truck around the yard and then jacked up the front end and could feel some play in the wheels. I ended up having to retighten the bearing nuts and then there was enough clearance for the clip to be put on the axle stub. It tightened up good the first time, seemingly, but there was still some slack in there that got brought out by the wheel turning while driving around the yard.
These Superwinch's are nice, it is good to have my 4WD back in operation. At first I was going to stay with the Auto hubs, they did have me spoiled. But it was $300 for new Auto's or $100 for the Superwinch manuals-including the conversion kit which consist of 2 bearing nuts and a spacer/washer per wheel.
