I have noticed, as per some of my other post on here, that there is a weird popping noise coming from something in my truck. Heres the conditions on where its happened
On grass, accelrating hard, the popping noise occurs. Not just a popping noise, can feel it also.
Taking a turn and accelrationg hard, will almost 100% cause the popping issue.
Also, the other day I was recovering a buddy who got stuck, and I had to go over some iffy terrian, well I flexed the rear axle to were my 33x12.50 on the back driver side was off the ground a little, and when I just barely hit the gas, it made a weird noise like something was free spinning inside the axle housing. Im wanting to point my finger at the LSD...
Is this a common issue with these trucks? Anything else to look at? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
yeah, you can feel the shuddering. The problem is the clutch packs in rear end. It was a common issue with the earlier models, there actually was a technical service bulletin (TSB) issued about this. I had my 04 fixed under warranty per the TSB.
Spin out on some gravel - immediately stop the truck and go back and see if there are two scratch tracks. If so, your LS is working. The popping noise is usually taken care of with a diff oil change and additive from the dealer - make sure to use only LS oil in it. Did you buy it new? Just wondering if maybe somebody else put the wrong oil in it.
My lsd works awesome but it will make noise's some times. Like the rare ocasion when one wheel spins it makes a horrible noise. Mine has never maid a popping noise though. Do what Tylus suggested and see what noises and actions occur when you do it.

FORD: 1998-2004 F-150
ISSUE:
Some 1998-2004 F-150 4X4 vehicles with a one piece drive shaft may exhibit a clunking or grunting noise and/or a shudder sensation from the driveline. The condition will typically occur during light to moderate acceleration from a stop and/or braking. This may be caused by the slip yoke not sliding smoothly on the transfer case output shaft splines.
ACTION:
To service, lubricate the slip yoke with Teflon Grease (D2AZ-19590-A). Refer to the following Service Procedure.

Thats deff it, it feels like its right under my feet almost.
too bad you're out of warranty though. How many miles on your truck? Maybe you can ask the dealer to cover it (or at least partially) since it is a known problem and has a TSB. I've heard of dealers giving a one time freebie repair if just outside of the warranty period.
