No 4X4!

Okay...this morning I found myself on a sandy road and thought I'd engage 4X4 and let things turn and lube up. I've got a 93 F-150 with E4OD and that electronic, push-button, 4 wheel actuator on the dash. I pushed the button and nothing happened. Tried all the positions, in park, neutral, slightly moving, not moving at all. Nothing. I do remember last time I used 4X4 I had to hold the button in longer than normal for everything to engage, but it did engage. I didn't have a lot of time this morning, but I did check the fuse...it's good. What's the normal culprit in this case? Seems I remember that the actuator switch on the transfer case is one of the weaker links. What are some things to check and how do I check them. My shop manual on CD-ROM has not arrived yet, and my Haynes book doesn't go into very much detail in this case. It will be Monday before I get a chance to crawl around under it so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

REX, why don't you put this up in the F150 forum? You'll probably get some responses. Sorry that I can't help.
