I HAVE A FORD F 250 3/4 TON LARIAT. IT HAS A 4 BARREL HOLLEY ON IT. I AM ONLY GETTING 6 MILES TO THE GALLON, AND THE TWO BACK JETS ARE STRUCK OPEN. WHAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PREFORMANCE OF A 4 BARREL AND A TWO BARREL. I WILL BE TOWING OR HAULING A 2500 LB BALE OF HAY AND AT TIMES HAULING ABOUT 300 TO 600 GALLONS OF WATER. I CAN ONLY HAVE A BED WEIGHT OF 1500 LBS. SO CAN I TOW MORE WEIGHT AND WHAT SIZE OF TRAILER WOULD I NEED TO HAUL THESE WEIGHTS, JUST SOME EXAMPLES WOULD HELP. I AS A WOMAN AM PRETTY MECHANICALLY INCLINED, BUT DOUBT MYSELF, IS THIS SOMETING I CAN DO OR SHOULD I LEAVE IT TO THE REAL GUYS. I HAVE GOTTEN 7 QUOTES OF 5 TO 6 HUNDRED DOLLARS, AND RECENTLY I HAVE GOTTEN A 3 HUNDRED QUOTE AND THAT WILL ALSO INCLUDE REPLACING THE TBI ON THE REAR TANK. WHAT IS THE NORM FOR THIS YEAR OF THIS TRUCK WITH A 4 BARREL AND 2 BARREL AS FAR AS GAS MILEAGE. I LIVE 30 MILES OUT OF THE CITY AND AM GETTING READY TO MOVE ANOTHER 40 MILES OUT.
Well I Got The Carb Rebuilt, Then We Found That The Three Front Plugs Werent Firing On The Ps Side. We Took The Valve Cover Gasket Off And Found A Few Chard Blow Hole Markes In The Intake Manifold And Changed That. Then We Clicked The Engine Over And Click And Click Just To See If The Pistons Were Functioning, I Was Afraid The Lobes On The Cam Were Worn Off. I Have Replaced The Wires, Plugs, Dist Cap And Rotor. I Am Now Getting About 10 To 11 Gallons A Mile, A Far Cry From What I Was Getting Before. On Occasion When I Am At High Speed 55 Or 60 If I Let Off The Gas It Will Back Fire, But If I Let Off Slowly It Wont. I Have Moved The Dist Cap Little By Little And Still To No Avail. I Think And Know It Is Still Missing. Would The Dist Need Replaced. Dont Know If Maybe It Jumped Timing, Or If I Should Replace Dist.
When The Mechanic First Called Me He Said I Only Had Three Cylinders Running, Then When I Got There We Got Another Two Up. So That Means That There Still Arnt 3 Firing. Carb Work Went Fine. You Know You Start One Thing And It Blends Into The Next Job To Be Done. But Thats Life. Its A Ford Wont Own Anything Else.
Without much to go on, it sounds like you should start with a good tune-up. Plugs, wires, PCV, etc. None of it may help if it has millions of miles and is just plain wore out.
Well After Getting Carb Rebuilt Leaving It A 4 Barrel And Replacing The Intake Manifold Gaskets, New Wires, Plugs, Pvc, Distributer Cap And Rotor.
I Am Having Backfiring. Now If I Am Going 50 Yo 60 Then Let Off The Gas It Really Back Fires So Loud That Sometimes If There Is Someone Next To Me They Swerve, If I Let Up Slowly It Either Does A Small Back Fire Or None At All. I Still Dont Think The First 3 Cylinders From Front To Back On Pass Side Are Not Firing. I Think One Thing Is The Choke Pull Off, I Need To Replace The Choke. And The Catalitic Converter Is Just Plum Full. I Wont Have Driven It For About 2 Days And Walk On The Pass Side At The Door Area And Smell Raw Gas There Are No Leakes And I Think Its All Clogged And Full. Now If I Let It Set Till The Choke Pulls Off Itself It Runs Fine, But If I Jump Right In And Drive And Force The Choke Pull Off Off It Will Pull Off But Run Crappy. When The Truck Came Back It Purred Like A Kitten, But I Could Tell That All The Cylinders Werent Firing, But It Started Back Firing And I Moved The Distrubuter A Little, Still Back Firing And Moved It Back The Other Way And The Same And Put It Back To The Place It Was Before. Could The Timing Be Off, The Reason For Back Firing. I Dont Know Of Course It Could Be Vacume Lines? In The Wrong Place. I Need To Get A Ford Book For My Truck. Could The Plugs Have Been Bumped On The Insertion, The Gap, Not Be Right. I Know The Come Pre Gapped But I Think I Will Take Them Out And Make Sure They Are Gapped Right I Think Its .o35 I Will Have To Look It Up. Now A Friend Told Me A Long Time Ago To Check To See If Plug Is Firing, While Running Pull A Wire Off And The Engine Will Bog Down A Little, And To Do It One At A Time And All Are Doing It Accept The 3 On The Passengers Side.
I Have Also Been Told That Its Ok For It To Run Like That It Saves Gas, But If Its Gonna Run Like That I Wish It Were Two On Each Side Instead Of Four On One And One On The Other. If Your In El Paso Texas Call Me At 915 849 9799 Late Eve.
