[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Mar-02 AT 10:23 PM (EST)]just put a mini spool in the 9 inch rear axle today. it was easier than i thought it would be. the only trouble i had was getting the carrier appart it was a pain in the butt. we got it apart after several hours of prying. and its a good thing i had it appart because i found that the 3rd member was cracked on the inside where the bearing goes for the pinion. i thought these were indestructable guess not. i was just glad that my buddy had a 28 spline layin in his back yard that he was planning on putting under hid 96.

what is a mini-spool ???
it is basically the same as a full spool it works on the same theory
you take your differential apart and take out the spider gears which
give you the open differential ( where the tire with the least amount of traction is the one that spins ) what the mini-spool does is makes both axle shafts act as one solid axle shaft giving you wwhat is known as a straight posi where both tires spin at the sametime all the time. which is most desireable when going off-road and constant traction is a factor. A mini-spool is cheaper than a full spool and alot cheaper than a locker. a mini-spool differs from a locker in the way that when you are driving down the road with a locker going straight the locker is engaged and when you turn the locker disengages alllowing one wheel to turn faster than the other same as a open differential but when you are off-road the locker senses a tire spinning and locks the axles like the mini-spool but the mini-spool is constant lock when the locker is not.
Locker vs's mini-spool or full spool is a long on going conversation that which one is better than the other It all boils down to which you prefer.
Thank you, sir! That's great info to have. I've heard that discussed but never knew the diff between the locker and spool.
Is a mini spool something you'd put on a daily driver or mainly off-road? I would think it would put a lot of stress on the diff if you drove it on dry pavement everyday. Or is that what the "discussions" are all about?
A spool of any kind is something you would ABSOLUTLY NOT put on a daily driver!!! The tire wear and axle stress would be immense on pavement. The inside tire in a turn would hop and chirp all the time with a spool. Even lockers have harsh street manners. I would go locker for a dailey driver, and then something simple like the lock-rite.
that about sums it up on what a mini spool is. i drive my truck daily but only about 5 miles a day to and from work. i am also running 38 inch swampers so it makes it easier on the tires because theey have more side wall flex than a smaller tire. it doesnt BARK the tires as bad as i thought it would. i cant wait till my buddy put his 3/4 ton axle on the front of his 69 bronco so we can go see how it does on the trail. it will be nice to have 3 wheel drive versus two (if you dont know in a 4 wheel drive system, when in 4 hi or low, only one tire per axle is receiving power). i cant wait to see the rooster tails fly in the mud. ill let yall know how it works. as far as putting a spool into a daily driver it will probably just accelerate tire wear on the rear tires. the wear factor realy doesnt bug me cause the truck is built for off road use. i wont get ticked if i break something and it sits for a while until i get it fixed.

The spool would be awesome for the mud! I have Detroit lockers in front so the spool would complete the package. BTW, just checked ebay for mini-spools and there's about a dozen for under $30. No idea what condition they're in or even which one I need.
if you have a 9 inch rear end you just need to find out if you have a 28 spline or a 31 spline axle. my buddy said that you can tell this by the way the axle tubes go into the houseing but i am not sure what the difference is. ill check with him in the morning. if you have the time just pull out one of your axle shafts and count the splines. by the way i did get my mini spool off of ebay. it was a guy who sells them so they are brand new. if i can find his number ill let you know. my spool was shinny and new. hopefully i will get my front axle fixed this weekend so next weekend i can give her a try in the mud on the tank trails at quantico.

I beg to differ. I've been running a spool on my truck for over a year now and will tell anyone listening that all the rumors and horror stories about spools are BS. The tire wear has been very minimal. What typically happens is the front tires get rounded on the edges a little more than usual. In no way does it eat up tires like crazy. Yes it puts alot of strain on the drivetrain but I have had zero problems so far. I live in town also so I do alot of sharp turning. This truck is my daily driver and I wouldn't trade my spool for nothing. I'm putting my truck on a 76 high boy chassis here next week and I'm seriously considering taking out the posi it came w/ and spooling it. I like it that much. In theory spools sounds like they'd be horrible but in all actuality they are quite livable on a daily driven rig.
That's interesting. I wonder how many (if any) other people put in a mini spool and DID have problems. I've heard parts of discussions about converting open axles to solid (I assume they were talking about spools) and it's always the same thing. "You'll destroy the diff", or "you'll eat tires". It's nice to hear from someone who actually did it and didn't have problems.
Has anyone here had a bad experience with them? I mean first hand and not my cousin's friend' brother...
I am running a mini spool in the front of my truck and I drive it daily. NEVER HAD A SINGLE PROBLEM. now if you put a mini spool in a full time 4x4 yes you will have problems. i just unlock my hubs and put it in 2wheel drive and no problem or excessive tire wear going down the street as for going off-road with the locker in the rear and my mini spool upfront my truck is ALMOST (key word there) unstoppable
i have dug the front bumper right up againest a rock off-road just to climb right over it although i would not reccomend that as a daily practice it is alittle hard on the front end hitting big rocks
