I am getting a quick surge around 55 to 65 mph and sometimes when I start to take off. I'm thinking its my CPS or at least thats where I will start. Could you tell me the best place to purchase 1. I will do it myself, I don't want the dealer to touch my truck
That sounds like the same problem I've been having. I've also had a rough idle lately. I just ordered a new black cps, from dp-tuner. I'm hoping that solves my problem, but if not at least I can rule that out. Not sure if that's much help, but that's where I'm getting mine.
Thanks for the info Mike, I will check DP out also. Hope that solves the problem. yea Ive read the black CPS is the way to go, was just wondering where to get it. THANKS
Stick with a new black one from Dp. The grey's are causing some trouble here and there. My truck doesn't like the grey at all and sets some codes now and then. Started with black, looked at going blue, then went to grey, and now back to black...
I have had several over the years but never a new black one from international. The one I just got from DP is from international and my truck by far is running the smoothest it ever has. Are there any differences between the one from Ford? not as strong maybe? just taking a guess, I can tell a difference.
Black one from the Ford house 25.00 + tax fixed my issue from Tuesday.
You might double check the part number. I believe the $25 black ones at the Ford house are for the 97 model (OBS) trucks. Of course if yours is working well, maybe we should start looking into the depth of the old CPS, and see if the trucks share the same cam gear.
That's why you have FTE. You'll be able to understand this stuff and confuse everyone else. Basically, there has been a lot of debate on the Blue CPS, but it comes from International and was designed for one of their versions of the 7.3 that has a different (lower) HP rating than our engines. It changes the timing a little bit since it was designed for a different platform. Some believe it makes the engine run better.
Our original CPS was Black from Ford or International. The new CPS that came out, which is much cheaper, is gray, and was used for the recall. On some trucks, not all, the gray cps can cause the engine to not run right, or throw phantom codes, usually relating to the #8 cylinder. Less severe issues with the #3 cylinder have also been noted on cylinder contribution (CCT aka Perdel) tests.
Well, This ticks me off a bit.....Back many months ago when alot of 7.3 owners were having so many problems with the ORIGINAL BLACK CPS and a group had threatened a class action law suit aganst Ford that the way I understand it caused Ford to finally recall it.
I, like countless others went to my local Ford dealership and had the recall done, they installed THE NEW GRAY SUPER FANTASTIC CPS, and I thought everything was good-(mind you I had purchased 2 GRAY FORD CPS units and had them in glove box) then I start hearing about THEM causing trouble.....WOW.......May be an overseas company will come up with a RED CPS and charge $500.00 just for the part and guarantee it for 100,000 miles aganst failure and even cover towing?????
I have over 3k miles on my GRAY CPS and will go through BOTH GRAY ones in my glove box before I buy anouther one regardless of the color!!!

I like the sounds of a red CPS
The gray ones have only been a problem in SOME trucks. I've had one in mine for about 40,000 miles. If I play with my scanner and monitor live data, I can see a small difference in the #3 & #8 cylinders, but driving the truck you would never know there's a problem. If your truck doesn't have any symptoms from the gray CPS, don't worry about it. Just leave it in there.
