Bad harmonic balancer
My serpentine belt was noisy, so the dealer replaced it. I drove 700 miles from AZ to CO. The next morning my wife drove less than 2 miles and the car starting making bad noises and was spraying green between the radiator and engine. Thinking it was anti-freeze I had the car towed to the Ford garage. The green turned out to be the dye in the freon.
The serpentine belt wore out prematurely because the pulley separated from the rubber part of the harmonic balancer. When the mechanic replaced the belt, the pulley shifted towards the engine and he put the belt on the rubber core of the harmonic balancer. This caused the pulley to rub against an A/C hose until it wore a hole in the hose. It could have been worse because the smaller diameter of the core made the tensioner swing further out and extremely close to a heater hose.
I am back in AZ and ready to head to the dealer. Thankfully I have the Ford ESP--don't drive an Explorer without an extended warranty! I am getting my money's worth. It is just a pain to keep breaking down and spending time at the dealership. This is the 4th time this vehicle has been towed for a mechanical breakdown!
