Question Any 6637/DIY Intake Issues?

I've read a few posts about the DIY 6637/Tymar intake and how the filter can accidentally come off.

How can that happen? My filter is seriously tightly secured to the 4" intake pipe. I have to struggle pretty hard to remove the filter--without the clamp. I can't imagine the filter coming off, especially if I use a hose clamp (which I do).

I've also heard the filter may not weatherproof/water repellent. Is this true?

I have the Donaldson B085011.

Thanks,

Jake

Jake, I haven't had any issues with mine. I have only read about a couple of them ever slipping off. I'm sure they aren't waterproof. I read about different people covering them with a plastic bag when washing the engine compartment. I remember someone forgot to take off the bag and started the truck for a few sesconds and then realilzed it. I think it might have crushed the filter but don't remember that for sure.

When you say 4" intake pipe, are you referring to the rubber/plastic intake tube from the factory, or a short piece of 4" pipe you added? Some people have had issues with just slipping the intake tube directly on the filter and clamping it down. The rubber neck on the filter isn't fully rigid, and since things expand and contract with heat cycles, they can work their way loose.

None of the air filters react well to water, including the one that comes from the factory. There was some concern about water getting to the filter if you do the zoodad mod, but enough people have done this, that it doesn't appear to be an issue.

I added 4" of aluminum tubing.

I'ver been running mine for a couple of years now, witht he zoo-dad mod and I've been in good shape. And it tends to rain here just a little bit! I also have a piece of 4'' exhaust pipe in between the filter and the stock intake, so it is a lot more secure than just fiter to stock pipe. Mine never did slip before, but it was always on my mind.

I've been using one for almost three years with no problems (uncovered), I do remove it when cleaning the engine, and also spray the boot and filter top with contact cleaner/or brake clean when it change it. That leaves it wet enough to put back on (quickly) but dries up and hasn't come off yet.

You're fine then. I've never read of one coming off a piece of pipe.

Bingo.

And as far as water goes, unless you spray it with a hose or dump a bucket of water on the filter, you won't have any problems.

I scored a 4" section of exhaust pipe when I did my muffler deleate and, with the addition of one more 4 inch band clamp, I installed the pipe into the intake tube and the other end into the filter. No problems at all. Love the sound and am sure EGT's have decreased (not sure though, no gauge) Haven't really noticed any improvement in MPG's, but I didn't expect any.
