86- 300 six questions:

Hi guys
I have a couple of questions about my 86 F150 with the 300 six. The other day I noticed a slight sqeaking/squealing sound when it was ideling- the belts are tight. My guess is the fan clutch but wondered if anyone can think of anything else? Second question- I noticed a oil spot under the truck and the bellhousing is all wet- i am pretty positive that this means its time for a new rear main seal- the problem is I am 1300 miles away from home at college and i really dont want to pay someone to fix it- I am wondering how long can I go with it like this? I really want to make it home at Christmas and then when i am home i will pull the motor and change the seal myself. What do you guys think?

You can go a very long time with leaky seals. Try a bottle of CD2 and it might help expand the seals.

The squeak could be a number of things from bearings in your alt to a dry rotted belt. It may very well be the fan clutch though.

my rear main has been leaking for the past idk since i got it in march. i go through about a quart of oil a month. but the belt squeal. belts are cheap replace 'em to find out if it is a belt if not its probably a fan clutch. seal leaks can go quite a while but just fix the rear main when you get back to college.

Spray a little bit of Belt Dressing on the belts, one at a time using the instructions on the can. If the squeek disapears, then that paticular belt is the culprit. Replace the belt soon, because the squeek will come back sooner or later.

If the belt dressing does not resolve the squeeking, check all the belt driven accessories for wear, including the fan clutch and water pump. Wiggle the pullies back and forth and check for play in the bearings. If there is movement, then the bearings of the accessory is suspect.

Also, if the truck is a standard transmission, check the Clutch disc for oil contamination when you change the rear main seal, and replace it if it's contaminated. I recomend doing a clutch job anyway with it already apart.

Hope this helps.
