I have a 87 f150 2wd fuel injected 4.9L with a 4 speed.I would like to change it to an automatic. Is there any way I could use a trans with a lockup convertor or 4speed,without changing the computer and harness?I would be using a salvage yard for the parts.Thanks.
Well i'm not that knowledgeable with tranny's but i believe the C6 isn't computer controlled so you shouldn't have a problem with the computer or harness. E4OD i think would need a computer so thats a nogo. If i'm wrong i'm sure i will be corrected. If i'm right more info will be given. Do a search and you should get plenty of info. Even searching for MAF conversions should at least tell you what trannys are computer controlled.
Just out of curiosity, why would you want and auto? In a manual you have full control, you can get better gas milage. You can stay in your power band as long as you want, or out of it. It helps to save your brakes if you downshift when coming to stops, IMO manual trannys are more depenable than autos too.
I have had the truck for 6 years I love it.My wife tried to learn to drive it and almost had 2 wrecks(1 roll back,1clutch instead of brake). We need something we both can drive.I like both types anyway.
I am no transmission expert but jerg is correct, in a way. The C6 is mechanical/hydraulic so requires no electrics, however it is a 3 speed. The E4OD is 4 speed but requires a computer. As I understand it you can buy stand alone aftermarket controllers for it but expensive. I would think your best bet would be a Ford AOD. If you post this on the transmission page you may get better answers. Good luck.
hey 73-f1,you must also realize you HAVE to install a new radiator with cooler lines to the tranny as well. That is,if your current radiator does not have the fittings on it to hook up the cooler lines.
I figured it wasn't possible.I wouldn't bother unless I could have overdrive.I do alot of interstate driving for work.I guess I'll save up and get a 92-96 model.I wouldn't mind getting one with a/c anyway. Thanks for your responses.
You could replace it with a Aod out of a mid 80's truck you would have to figure out how to set up the TV cable but it came behind a lot of 302 powered trucks and should bolt up.
AOD will be the best. It does not need any computer to operate, just the T/V line which is a must or you will burn up the tranny. May have to change the cross member to the AOD(or move it depending on mounting in frame) and probly need the correct driveshaft for the AOD. The tranny cooler in the raidator is not a must but the biggest external cooler will be needed if your raidator don't have the tranny cooler in it. Lot of people I know by pass the raidator cooler while mudding, they have the biggest or multiple external coolers and never had problems(up high with electric fans to keep from mud plugging them up). The biggest thing I hate is I keep looking for the clutch!!! there is none!
