my 88 f-350 4x4 is pulling to the left real bad. Bled out system numerous times, no luck. It skids both left tires, but neither the RF or RR will skid. Has this ever happened to anyone ??
You didn't clearly state it but I'm assuming you mean it pulls to the left only when braking and not all the time. If this is the case then you need to replace the right front caliper and adjust/replace the right rear drum brakes.
yes, only under braking. You know, i thought the same thing as you mentioned--adjust RR brake and replace RF caliper. I adjusted the RR up, it was even dragging a little, and took her out on the road, slammed the binders and only got the left side to lock up. I will probably replace the RF caliper and try it again. I was looking for anyone that has messed around with the proportioning valve or that anti-lock system on the 88's.Kevin
There are no adjustments available on the proporioning valve and RABS, and these systems should not need any adjustment if the brakes are functioning properly. Partially siezed calipers and misadjusted drum brakes are very common. The rear drum brakes are notorious for failing to adjust properly, I find I have to manually set them about twice a year to maintain good braking power.
i don't think the RABS is working correctly at all, but i doubt it is causing the problem, i'll replace the caliper and go from there.thanks for your help!! Kevin
I'm still learning about Fords but on my Dodge when I had to bleed the back brakes I had to do it with the motor running, because of the ABS and proportioning valve apparently you can't "completely" bleed the lines without the vehicle running. Not sure if thats how you did it, but I had a similar problem for about a month after replacing the entire rear brake system, then I took it to a shop and the guy said just try it with the motor running and it worked great. Good luck, nothing worse than having brake problems.
You have to replace calipers in pairs, or it will pull. The proportioning valve only affects front to rear braking, not side to side. If the brakes between the two sides are uneven, then the problem lies at the wheels.
right, having the engine running does seem to make a difference. And yes, i was planning on replacing both calipers at the same time, i want this darn thing to drive right--i've replaced almost every other component on it--why not the braking system too??
You have to replace calipers in pairs, or it will pull.
That hasn't been my experience, but I guess if you replace 1 and it reverses the pulling problem then that just confirms both calipers has issues to begin with.
