I am looking for a muffler to give me a really deep tone to put on my 86 f150 302. ill be running dual 2.25 to the rear axle and after the axle im turnin the 2.25's to 4". Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
a glasspack from summit will do ya good, since its a "nameless" part its really cheap. i got a 18" glasspack on my '81 and it sounds deep and suits the truck well (2wd with 32" tires =D) the longer the glasspack the deeper the tone gets, but it gets quieter, i think. Never got around to testing it since all my friends (all freakin chevy guys) love the generic sound of flow masters on a 350.
Ive had packs on all my truck and i love them, ive got some generic ones, sounded good before break in, but now they dont sound to great, until you get up into the rpm's around 4k there music to my ears... The cherry bombs i had on my 69 were BEAUTIFUL sounding!
Orignally i was goin to get the dynomax race bullets but if u say there generally the same than i might as well just go with the flowtech redhots. there 30 bucks cheaper.
What would be the difference between a regualar glasspack like the rehots compared to a race muffler glasspack style? or any racemuffler compared to a standard muffler for that matter?
race muffleres and glass packs are kinda the same but not really...
Race mufflers are a straight through muffler kinda like chambered mufflers but no chamber... If that makes any since... Glass packs usually have a metal sleve with little hook looking opening that catches some of the exhaust flow and muffles the sound.
A straight though race style muffler has a straight through flow, and the exhaust packing is aroung the sides, with a screen holding it in place, kinda similar kinda not....
ok i get how they differ by building them. thinkin bout this than, the race mufflers should last longer than glasspacks i think. im thinkin that the race muffler wont loose that sound it started with like glasspacks do but not sure.
Now how bout the sound of em. since there made different hows the sound comparable?
youtube is your friend! btw either lasts just as long as the other... if its protected from the elements so it cant rust away. Cheap glasspacks have fiberglass (go figure) and it tends to burn away over time, so it gets louder i believe. what is a race muffler? flowmaster 40? they use steel wool and a bigger design (less sound) that would be a more pricier "glasspack". go glasspack if you want that agressive exhaust note YouTube - Flowmaster vs Glasspack (Cherry Bomb) a great comparison on a jeep cherokee, i like the test this guy does on sound levels
IF your using the mufflers in an area that requires insepction, make sure you put the race only tags, somewhere they cant be seen... Like the top of the exhaust....

A race muffler is one like a dynomax bullet, Not a flowmaster 40. And a flowmaster 40 does not use steel wool, it's hollow can with baffles inside. Your thinking of a magnaflow.
The dynomax bullets are what i was looking at buying but if theres no real difference in sound between them versus the cheap glasspacks (flowtech red hots), i might as well just get the red hots. but i have also heard that over time the bullets dont loose there sound like the traditional glasspacks do, is this correct?

They should retain their sound because they don't use the packing that glasspacks use, I'm pretty sure?
I had some on my lincoln mark viii and it sounded absolutely amazing, but not all cars sound the same.
