Hello
I have located a 88 F250 4x4 6800gvw that i want to use to convert my 83 f250 to 4wd. I have been told that lite duty f250 have a dana 44 instead of a dana 50. Is the 44 too weak of an axle to use?How does one identify the difference? The truck has a 302 and 4 or 5 speed. What ratio is axle code 29? My 83 is a 8600 GVW with 1ton drivetrain. I also was told that 87-88 had bad hubs? What does that mean or did someone ruin theirs and now all have bad hubs? Just getting into the 4x4 world now!
Thanks GENE
You can run your Dana 44 all day with stock tires without a problem. You can even put 35's on it, just go a little easy. I know a guy who ran 38's, then upgraded to 44's, and just last month blew apart his Dana 44 after several years of huge tires.
the dana 44 should be heavy enough to do most all applications. I really don't know your exact plans for the truck, but unless you are building a torque monster, you should be just fine.
