depends on the model and the year of it, if they still make it anymore and whatnot. my one rifle is a lever action .22 winchester that they stopped making a while ago. my dad bought it about 30 or so years ago for 100 bucks and now its valued at about 350 or so a gun store told us. if its newer and it has open sights, then that seems a bit high for where i live. maybe 300 bucks for a bolt action with a scope.
You should keep looking. I had a Marlin, lever action .30.30 with Lyman Micronite sights. I sold it for $190. Who knows which gun was better? But those guns are out there for less. Keep looking.
PS: The longest shot I ever tried with that.30-.30 was offhand, at a steel gong the size of a pie plate, 136 yds. I hit it 3/3. That was part of a Cowboy Shilouette competition.
If I ever get another Deer gun, I wont waste any time on a .30-.30. I'm going for a .270 or a .308
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Nov-02 AT 10:59 PM (EST)]Well here we dont even have a rifle season, only shotgun. So i'm gonna have to cross the river and pay an out of state liscense fee if I want some whitetail. So i'm debating if i'm gonna buy a rifle or just stick with the old 1300. I love target shooting with a rifle. Just trying to decide of I want to shell out the money for somethin i might not hunt with. Oh well, guess it depends if I find one for the right price, Winchester or Marlin
I don't have one anymore but I use to own a Marlin 30-30. I have shot the Winchester. I prefer the Marlin because of the side ejection. This allows you to scope it quite nicely. If your into open sights then I guess it don't matter. But with the Marlin you keep the option open. Just my 2 cents worth.
I agree on the Marlin 30-30. I much prefer the side eject over top eject. I also have a scope on mine, with mounts that allow me to use my iron sights well. I've owned mine since 1975. Fit and finish on it are far above the level of the post '64 Winchesters I have seen. I'd love to own a pre '64 Win 1894 though.
If you're looking for a plinking type gun, I'd suggest a .22 cal. Much cheaper to shoot. The Ruger 10-22 must be about the most popular .22 rifle out there. Fine firearm with tons of accessories available for it. I have a Marlin model 989 (discontinued) which I also like, with the exception of it having only a 7 shot clip. One of my favorite plinkers is my Ithica M-49 single shot. I paid $26 for it in 1975, and the accuracy is as good as any of the other .22's I have.
Check out Walmart for some good prices. I found out a few years ago they have an inventory of clearance priced firearms, not on display. I don't know if this is nationwide, but all 6 stores I checked out here had some. They kept the inventory on a yellow legal pad! I bought my Savage 7mm Mag at about a 45% discount. Neighbor picked up his Remington 30.06 the same way.
i bought a FLAWLESS winchester modle '94 from a former coworker 2 years back. he wasnt sure how old it was. i just looked it up the other day, 1973 was the date of manufactor.
i used to have a marlin 30-30, and as for open sights, the back rear sight never sat still, always had to readjust it, always missing shots. ( no not an excuse ) so i put a scope on it and still wasnt happy. my winchester is 29 years old and dead accurrate.
as for sights on the winchester, i have a "side" mounted 3-9x40 tasco scope, mounted from the factory. GREAT setup- you can use scope or open sights.
by the way- winchester 94s are the highest selling firearms EVER of one modle. i hunted with a guy who's great great uncle bought his in 1912 for only $12.00 new, the gun functions flawlessly, shoots perfect.
and as for owning a gun you cant use for deerhunting, well, i have 6 of those laying around but you never know when the dnr may allow you to rifle hunt in you area. that price of $300 sound good for new.
The model 94 is a great brush gun for deer but not so great at longer ranges. You can sight in most any gun to hit a target at any given yardage but in the real world of hunting other factors must be taken into consideration such as the drop of the bullet at given yardages as well as foot lbs. of force or knock down power.
There are more versatile calibers available, some already mentioned, the .308 and .270, but the granddaddy of them all would have to be the 30-06. It is without question the most popular rifle cartridge every made and can be loaded for varmint or moose and anything in between.
If you just enjoy shooting the lever action and the distance is 100yards or less, it would be a good gun… but not very versatile.
Winchester Model 94 "Ranger" sells for $465.94 + tax CAD. (today that's $294.14 USD)
This was the rifle I shot my first deer with. I love the lever action.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Nov-02 AT 04:27 PM (EST)]I will check out the Marlins, see if i can round one up to shoot. I already have a .22 and a 20 and 12 ga. But i just love shooting lever action rifles. I'll have to start petioning to get us a rifle season.
Another idea i kinda tinkered with was a 9410 (410 lever action)I'm sure they dont have any knock-down power, but they did start letting people use .410's here this year. But the price for the guy is unreal, like 400+ dollars. The more I think about it, the more i realize i need to think more about it.
model 94 used to be a hundred dollar rifle, i had them in 30-30,and 44.....then i had a marlin 336....in 444, man what a shoulder buster. i no longer hunt but a i still have a remington woodmaster 742 ..in 308.......308, 270 or 30-06.....308 for brush the other two for open shots dan / ft
