i have some long tube headman headers and some shortys but i got them from a guy with a mustang will they work for my 85 f150 4wd, also is there any other way to tell the difference from a 302 and a 351 other than the width of the intake manifold and im told that long tubes always leak and blow out headers any advice with that
Mustang longtube headers will produce frame and driveshaft interference problems on a truck and the shorties won't mate with the stock Y pipe.
The 5.8 has an 11" wide lower intake while the 5.0 is only about 7" wide.
The 5.8 distributor base is an inch below the lower intake gasket surface while the 5.0 is almost level.
The 5.8 water pump inlets are an inch below the head gasket surface while the 5.0 is almost level.
Something to ponder, my buddy was running shorty headers on his truck, and he was always complaining about his headers coming loose, making an exhaust leak sound. he got long tubes and hasnt had a problem.
He also gave me his old shorties, so when i install them I will see if I have a problem with them too.
the key to shorties is having really good multi layer gaskets and using 1" long headers bolts. the header flanges on most shorty headers are thicker then whats on the long tube headers and the bolts they supply all tend to be 3/4" long.
